23 rats and one Beaver today. Got another one of those JET BLACK MUSKRATS today. Strung another ten #1.5 Victor Stop-Loss at Rat toilets & feed bed locations on Muskrat Island. Rats and the Beav are drying before the fans awaiting a date for skinning later this evening. Running out of freezer space !!! It's been a really fun & productive season so far, and there are still 21 days of Water trapping left before we put this one in the books. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to trap this spring after missing last fall's rat season with my leg injury. Stay tuned. w

I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to trap this spring after missing last fall's rat season with my leg injury. Stay tuned. w On a serious note, which is rare for me because life's too short for serious, I just hate living in the half of NY with whack season dates. If I lived anywhere in the sensible season dates regions, I'd be out there too. A friend and I are headed north this weekend to social-distance ourselves by canoe on various (hopefully) beaver infested flows. He's a veteran outdoorsman who has never trapped beaver. And I've never caught an otter. Trying to change both status asap. I'll juggle lines up there thru 4/07 if I can find enough water that hasn't been hit too hard before. Nothing wrong with 10 - 20ish rats per day if they're right in your back yard. No finer place to be this time of year than out there on the water

Did a rat nuisance removal last week and the pelts are not worth a dime.

thank you! our rats down here have shed to that copper-red color now, but they might hold better up north. My friend wants to catch some rats if possible so we'll set any hot toilets along the way. I've been loading up on Duke #330s from F&T Post for $169 dozen this month... hopefully we can find enough hotspots for 4+ dozen big squares. If the catches run heavy, might have to swing southwest down to Bobby's house for some freezer space. I prefer not to skin more than 20 beaver in a night if possible

Four dozen 330's at 169.00/dozen, you'll need about 40 to 50 beaver to cover that. You better quit talkin and dreamin and get to doing Austin, before Bob has them cleaned out.

Bobby ain't at where I'm headed... although if he needs help skinning more than his 15-rat limit per day, he can run the excess up to Black Lake and drop them on us there

Pulled all our sets on Sandy Pond today. We just started to get a large percentage of Female Rats yesterday so we hauled up every thing and called it a day on the Pond. We kept out six beaver sets, and four rat sets on Black Pond, and plan to carpet bomb the rest of it starting Sunday for a three day operation on Muskrat Feed Beds & Toilets. Pulled out another a beaver and 16 Rats at the Pond Including another CREAMSICKLE Colored muskrat which we'll get tanned for the E-bay market. If we get much luckier with our catch, we might have to spring for another freezer as walleyed might only be able fit another 100 rats in currently available freezer space. Probably have to get one of those eight foot bed chest freezers that I can fill to the top with whole, un-skinned muskrats when we go out to the Dakota's to trap out the muskrat population before what's-his-name gets out there !!!! Stay tuned. walleyed

Had 16 yesterday and was at about 60% slight damage, and about 50% were females. That being said, the really big 3XL males & females were totally bite free. It was the smaller rats that had bite damage. w

You run any type of beaver floats ? No beaver floats for me here. I'm only trapping 2 step beaver. Ones I can catch about two steps off of the shoulder of the two-track or seasonal use road. I could be piling them up but no freezer space available. Then there is the rumor that the Castor Market (in New York State) has supposedly dropped 50% since February 1st, so there's that, then the fact traveling buyers like Groenenwold & Mark Boardman have suspended their fur pickup routes for frozen, green, skinned, beaver destined for the hatter market, and finally, the fur auction in Owego, NY previous weekend Beaver green & put-up combined sold for $5.30 average. Therefore, walleyed will not go out of his way to catch spring beaver. I'll leave that dubious task up to the "Insider" trapping legend.

I pulled everything Friday except for 4 rat sets & 6 Beaver sets. Going out to them check in a bit, as we were waiting for the nasty weather to clear a bit. It's not going to, so I'm going to have to put my TARP on and go out into the storm to check. Stay tuned for an update. w

One Big Beaver and one Rat out of 6 beaver sets, and 4 rat sets. stay tuned. w doing good, Bobby. I saw a smattering of rats this weekend myself, out all day long in that all-day rain. Not really enough to compile solid catches of, but nice to see swimmers prowling around everywhere.
We'll get 'em real good next year. Might even wanna team up for awhile in the early fall season... pump out some high-volume numbers together

If you two trap together next year, I bet we can use the word "break up" in the title of the post then as well! Everyone seems to be trapping beaver this year.....Kutil told me he could bang 300 down here. I believe him and he could do it..... MZ

Rockwood told me a good trapper could make a run at 1,000 beaver in St Lawrence county. I see no reason to disagree. We took 24 in two checks off a couple mile stretch of the Indian River. There are more miles of more rivers we did not have time to float. Yet

I almost dropped six 330s on those Route 3 colonies near you yesterday late afternoon along my way home, but it was raining hard and I was tired of being soaked all morning and didn't want to ride the remaining 3 hours home soaked again
Lemmw know how we make out. I'm headed back up north tomorrow if you need help checking our sets

Hey Austin, you're supposed to be "recreating locally", not taking your germs to other parts of the state.

Hey Austin, you're supposed to be "recreating locally", not taking your germs to other parts of the state. Imma rebel... no Wuhan Flu is gonna stop me from beaverpalooza 2020
besides, my new partner bobby has all that beaver steel soaking now. He's gonna need help peeling them big spring fatties... especially for a man with 15-muskrat daily limits. He can keep the carcasses and half the hides... I'll take other half hides and all the caster glands & oil sacks
