one muskrat for walleyed today. No beaver, thank god. must have confused myself somewhere on page three back there. Thought you wrote we made ten beaver sets yesterday, but no beavers today makes that impossible. Oh well, one muskrat is nice, no excessive time spent skinning tonight. Free to watch your favorite tv programs, cruise Facebook trapping groups, etc.

Hey Austin, you're supposed to be "recreating locally", not taking your germs to other parts of the state. Imma rebel... no Wuhan Flu is gonna stop me from beaverpalooza 2020
Yeah, it's all about Austin. Thanks for doing your part....

Yeah, it's all about Austin. Thanks for doing your part.... LOL! like you or anyone else even gives a f(something) about that. Go preach to Chris "Fredo" Cuomo about that... he contracted Wuhan from some big-wig party attended after big brother Adolf decreed the shelter in place order.
I'm driving to one of the remote corners of NY and floating canoes all day on human-devoid rivers. Oh wait... was this sarcasm on your part? Darn... I missed the humor. It sailed right over my head

You serious, you think I don't give an "f" about it? Your dead wrong, I'm in the age group that seriously gives an "f" about it. Not to mention I have someone close to the family who has tested positive and not doing well. I also give a huge rats @ss about the frontline workers who put their own health in jeopardy daily to combat this threat that continues to grow because heros like you don't give a rats @ss and think what they do doesn't matter. Like a kid on a playground.

Thanks Charlie. Actually its a father and his daughter who tested positive. Father starting to feel better, still at home, daughter is in ICU but came off of life support late last night and is stable. Killer for Dad is he or his wife are not even allowed to be in to see their daughter. Horrible thing this virus. Best wishes for your cousin.

I'll break protocol of my normal attempts at witty sarcasm with my first serious post in this thread.
The Wuhan virus is a serious matter. No one is trivializing it. As are all other infectious diseases, including the much more deadly ones already out there. What isolation attempts to do is not stop the outbreaks, not prevent the outbreaks... merely slow the inevitable down. For sole sake of medical centers not being crushed with excessive inflow of patients. Which means Wuhan will be with us all for months, years... forever. Medical science won't find an actual "cure" because cures don't exist for viruses. They may discover a vaccine similar to influenza that helps cut down the number of annual cases. But overall, Wuhan is here to stay. When the stay-home orders are lifted and people hunkered down at home raise their heads and emerge from fox holes, a second wave of infections will sweep thru in the same exact manner as dense populations in China are experiencing right now.
In my particular case, I drove fours hour's straight from Leicester to Hammond, stopping for gas & coffee at the local station in Geneseo where I go most days. I spent six hours on Black Lake and tribs collecting 330s. Then stopped at the McDonald's drive-thru in Watertown, gassed up again on the thruway paid at pump. And drove fours hours back home.
I saw live (and dead) beavers and otters, also mink and muskrats, eagles and ospreys, etc. I saw, met or talked to ZERO people anywhere on or near the water all day. If a single Wuhan virus ever made its way out on those waters at all, it would die of sheer loneliness.
Now, all those facts there shared... who else here in this musty message board or any or the other dinosaur sites where a few trappers still gather would have to explain themselves for going trapping? If any of the "big name" boys out there in the coyote world posted they were going skank-dogs trapping, would they get admonished for chasing that mangy ilk abroad?
I'll answer that question for you. Fawk no.

No Beaver or muskrat for walleyed the past 2 days. It has been blowing a peculiar, stiff, east wind here which blows my beaver scents/castor smells out into the lake rather than out into the beaver ponds. Very slow to non-existent movement here where I am trapping.
Not that I am complaining, as I am checking just a few sets.
I am nursing a very sore shoulder/Upper Bi-cep muscle injury from pulling a 8 foot conduit stake last week.
Hurts like heck.

I agree with the seriousness of this menace. But "isolation" does NOT mean that I cannot or must not venture from my domicile! I haven't been able to do much of anything since the "lockdown" other than go to and from the farm and to and from my daughter's/grandsons' home. They/we are our only contact. There is NO ONE else at the farm(s) but me, except at the home orchard my wife as well. NO farmwork getting done. So if I'm out driving, rest assured I'm not being a kid on a playground or failing to do my part. Let's put the blame and anger squarely where, and ONLY, it belongs -- friggin CHINA. period. Not knocking you, trappermac, just that things are getting explosive in different ways for us all... "Wearing masks will not only NOT help, but can HURT!" -- LIE! "There is no person-to-person transmission of this disease." -- LIE!!! "Jeffery Epstein killed himself." ok ok ok, just some comedic relief. The other day I got called out as a hoarder at the grocery store because I was in line with 4, yes FOUR, gallon jugs of distilled water (ok so I also go out to get groceries and buy gas); there were 12, 1-gallon jugs on the shelf. I needed 10. I did what I thought was the responsible thing and only took 4. I get to the checkout, Nurse Ratched made a career change and was the cashier at one of the local Hannaford's. "WE'VE GOT ANOTHER HOARDER!!!!" I'm stunned, and virtually EVERYONE is glaring hate at me. "ME?!??!" "YES, YOU - there's a LIMIT, 2 gallons of water per person per day!" "But, it's DISTILLED..." "TWO GALLON LIMIT PER CUSTOMER PER DAY! If you want more, cash out and come back in. Now, are you going to put those other two back or should I --" "Oh, no, by all means shove them up there, I'm sure there's plenty of room left." Just then the stock boy comes running over, holding an 8-12 X 11 sheet of paper - "Sorry, I haven't put up the sign yet." The sign? "Limit 2 per..." No apology from Nurse Ratched. WATER... the most plentiful substance on earth, and everyone has running water in this state. Didn't matter that I buy, AND HAVE BEEN BUYING, TWICE A WEEK EVERY WEEK FOR THE PAST 6-1/2 YEARS, between 8 and 10 gallons of water for one of our grandsons who has special needs. No, I'm labeled a friggin HOARDER. FROM THAT STORE, WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT, AND EVEN FROM THAT SAME B---H AS A CASHIER HALF THE TIME. So excuse me if I get sensitive about it during this time. I've been caring for the twin grandsons since schools closed March 13, and will be until they reopen. I'm there anywhere up to 15 hours a day, 7 days a week. My life as I knew it is over at least for now. But there's nothing better that I could ever do than the sacrifice being made for THEIR sake... and yeah... I'm both "grampa" AND "grumpa" some days. Including today. No possible way to even complete usual daily chores and get rest with the hours left in the day. Yeah, yeah, I know - "Grow a pair, Tim, we're all having a rough time." bite me.

Prayers Sent Tim. Hope you can get out to set at least one trap before April 15th and catch one creature, be it beaver, otter, mink, or muskrat. Hope you are feeling more optimistic soon. w

I am, Bob, and I surely do thank you. My season ends April 7th for mink and muskrat, I have no places for beaver although beaver ends later. I'm vicariously trapping through you and others, I appreciate the updates from you guys. Off-topic, but as for the plastic bag ban - what happened to it? Get to the stores with my own "permanent" bags, and - "We can't bag anything for you in your bags, but we can bag in plastic and give it to you. No charge on plastic, but if you want paper we have to charge you 5-cents apiece." Maybe it takes a crisis to show up the stupidity of some laws...

1 Beaver & 1 Rat today.
Pulled all but seven beaver sets.
Almost no apparent movement around here.
Activity levels near zero.
Strange.
Beaver may be practicing Social Distancing ?

Today, We pulled everything for the season as the spring runoff has wholly subsided in this area and animal movement has ground to a halt. We started our spring season before the Ice breakup, and followed It around to areas where we felt there a reasonable chance for a decent catch of Muskrats. We did not target mink, nor otter, and only trapped a beaver If it was incidental & convenient to our rat trapping. We were not in competition with anyone, nor were we pushing to catch big numbers of anything but rather worked within the constraints of our health limitations. In spite of dire projections of Muskrat scarcity by "expert prognosticators", We managed to take a goodly sum of rats and beaver for an ugly, old, fat, sick, crippled trapper with one foot in his canoe, and the other foot on a banana peel. Season totals are 202 Rats and 9 Beaver with three Black rats and two creamsickle rats going to the tannery. Thanks for coming along on my trap line, and hopefully We can do it again in the fall. Stay Safe, 6 feet apart, and wash your hands. walleyed out.

After picking up the last of my beavers and otters in St Lawrence county this morning, I dropped down to Rt3 and Sandy Creek around 12:30pm in hopes of seeing you there to visit. In person, real but lighthearted talk for a change. None of what I post here is meant any other way than sarcastic banter. Unless the prize is endless dates with supermodels I'm not interested in any competitions either. The concept of "bragging rights" among boys has less than zero interest or appeal to me I had a non-existent season here in the south between worst weather ever and nil fur right around me. Can't catch what doesn't exist. Obviously. I only owned seven #330s prior to March 1st but grabbed a couple dozen more, drove an hour south until 3/15 and then four hours north until today to places where fur is. Or was. It was a fun-filled, fruitful spring season for me too. Glad it ended today because my costs for all that fun are starting to add up! lol If I'm still alive and manage to dodge the Wuhan plague, I'll be up north for the opener 10/25. Might even have a camp up there by then, too. Saw a perfect spot for sale right next to that big dairy farm on the highway to Woodville. Two mobile homes and a shed, mere football toss from Lakeview. Stay tuned
