Good luck to you too. Hope all have a fun and safe season. I’ll be heading out in a while as well to run a shortened line this year due to gas prices ( and fur prices), but still hope to catch a few canines.

I was able to get about 1/3 of my intended sets in to today, I plan on about 40-50 this year. Today was on the hardest accessible area of the line on state land dragging a wheeled cart I made for such purpose, I look like some sort of lost rickshaw driver but it was effective enough.

Nice! Need to make some room to haul catch out tomorrow….. I got 25 sets in. Probably add a few here and there as season progresses, but really don’t want to travel like I used to. Drove 80 miles round trip 2 years ago and that was too much for the amount of sets I had out. Just too far between farms to make it worthwhile.

Yes, good luck everyone! My best friends son participated in the Pat Arnold trapping camp earlier this month and loved it! I plan to give him a hand this season as well as some of my equipment/traps that don’t get used much anymore. Have been getting gear ready for my annual trip up north…unfortunately solo again as my son will be busy with his second year of college…incredible how time flies!! Hoping my wife will come up to visit me at my camp during one of the weekends again! I believe I shared my video from last years trip already… m.youtube.com/watch?v=_rVaacZZ6UcTake care and be safe!! Good luck up there Dino, and nice that you have a young man ready to learn and that you are willing to help out! I know what you mean, my son is a sophomore in college as well and it’s crazy how fast he is growing up. Course, it also means I’m getting older and it’s tougher getting as many traps out as I used to! Hoping everyone has tight chains this morning.

Best of luck to you guys. I went steelhead fishing yesterday.. First opening day I missed in 15 years or better. With no coyote market and $5 fox I just have a tough time killing a fox for that. Getting soft as I get older I guess. Took 18 reds last year, some of the nicest reds I've taken, and got $96 for them, the early fox brought $3 each. Was disheartening. I do have all my permissions set up and will be doing some night hunting for canines and maybe I'll get something going in a couple weeks, we'll see. I do plan on getting after a few beaver and mink.

Mac, there's no money in hunting or fishing either but I do both anyway. I'm blessed to be trapping again this year, missed most of last year as you know. Yesterday (10/25/22) was my last day of PT, I've come a long long way. Last week the neurosurgeons removed all remaining restrictions on my activities. So yesterday I got out 10 fisher sets, today 7 DP's, 2 more fisher sets and only 1 coyote set (miserable soaking rain!). Oh and the obligatory weasel set along the fisher line to deal with the annual weasel-stealing-the-bait routine. Nothing in today's trap check. I may be in WMU 5H for marten and fisher in the next few weeks, not sure yet if that will work out. BUT IT'S GREAT TO BE OUT AGAIN!!! Always good to watch your videos, Dino! Yes time goes by fast... My personal theory goes something like this: When you're in a plane at 30,000 feet, travelling 600mph, it feels so slow. When you're in a tractor trailer doing 65 (yeah right!), it also seems relatively slow. Get in a Corvette and 30 feels fast. So, in my opinion, the closer you get to the dirt, the faster things seem to go by. I have hope, one of my twin grandsons can't wait to check traps with me this weekend and is already pestering me (I love it though) about going to convention next year. The boys will be 9 in December, unfortunately one is still in a wheelchair and only has use of his right arm. His mind is brilliant but his ability to speak is very limited. That hasn't stopped him and me from communicating since he was born. Somehow I'm going to work out a way where he can come with us for weekend trap checks and convention. Good luck, everybody, and keep the updates coming! - Tim

I have to knock the crap out of our local fisher population. It is NO exaggeration to say we're infested with them, we're crawling with them, all the rest. None of us in the area that use tubing for maple sap collection have ANY tubing left. The fisher find out just ONCE that there's something sweet in those lines, nevermind it's just during maple season, and EVERY bit of tubing gets chewed year-round. Two producers have already called it quits. Of roughly 2,800 feet on my lines alone, most pieces are less than 4 feet long, majority less than 2 feet. The lone "long" stretch of tubing is less than 20 feet and they dragged it out into the field. On game cameras, it looks like mommas are teaching the young how to do it from the early summer and on; actually, once the new tubing was put up. And we - all of us - rinse the lines at the end of the season, there's nothing sweet left in them. Unfortunately, I'm the only one in the area that traps, and I can only trap my own land, so the impact will not be enough. Raccoon rabies is starting to raise its ugly head again, mainly (opinion only) due to no trapping pressure because of flatline markets. So, even though I don't like the thought of trapping/skinning/fleshing/drying coon for about 1/4 cent per hour, like I've long said, there's no money in hunting or fishing (or anything else I like doing) either, it's something that needs to be done. Last year I saw more than a few coyotes bad with mange, I was ALMOST glad I wasn't trapping. We'll see how this year pans out.

Huh, so why don't I use maple syrup/sugar as bait? (You lure & bait makers might take a cue - it's too expensive but you'd sell a lot maybe!)

Best thread I’ve seen here in a long time! Haven’t been trapping much the past couple years myself…. I did put out a couple sets close to home, just so I could say I set a couple on the opener. Hope to get a few more out over the weekend. Probably send what I catch to get tanned, as it’ll cost more in gas to take them to a buyer than what I’ll get for them…. I remember when this happened in the late 80’s, early 90’s…. Hopefully it rebounds someday…. Good luck and keep the reports coming…

You're off to a good start Tony!
Dino, that sucks about the move but you'll still get it correct?
Tim...It's not about the money, it's about much more than that for me. None of my hobbies pay, they only cost.

Best thread I’ve seen here in a long time… Yeah, remember how it used to be on here? Like a community of NY trappers, good for the future of trapping. All gone now, and no communication from NYSTA. I fear for our future, never felt that way when things were fun here. Too bad. Hope you and family are doing well Eric.
