I used to either put it only down the hole, or else I sprayed over the entire set depending on what I was trying to accomplish with it. If a non-target (other than fox) was caught I blasted the whole site with urine. If I suspected some kind of contamination, I covered the whole set with it. If I thought everything was good, just a shot down the hole along with the lure. Lately, I only use urine about 25% to 50% of the time. Mostly down the hole. walleyed

Rarely use it. If I do it is by itself with just a stick, rock, tree root sticking out..nothing else but a bedded trap.

I use it when I remember to (probably close to 1 out of 4 sets). I usually put a couple squirts on the backing coming out at a 45 degree angle. I try to imitate an animal finding the bait and then taking a step to the side and giving it a squirt before taking off. I also use it if I ever have an animal dig up my bait/lure. I spray everything when that happens.

Dear Friend, Use 1/2 ~ 1 ounce of urine......Starting squirting the backing and dribble out over the pattern. Visualize a dog fox lifting his leg to mark that spot... Regards papabear

When a k-9 makes a attempt to smell urine left at a set from another k-9 or by you putting it there,he/she will place their foot close to its nose when attempting to smell it .
your task is to put a trap close enough to this spot as to where you will make his foot depress the pan on your trap and get caught.
years of learning this spot will make it alot easier for you to determine were to put your urine and sometimes it is at any one of the locations mentioned above.
sound easy doesn't it LOL
GOOD LUCK.

Seldom use it at dirtholes, but when I do, just a small squirt on the backing....K9's don't empty their bladders

If you have the means, read the book "Master Wolfer". I've tried his advice on urine usage and felt it worked for me.

Dear Mr. Jones, Ive had plenty of fox empty their bladders at a set, I can tell because the location wreaks of urine when I remake the set, {wink}....Regards papabear

I use urine at very set. How I use it is the only thing I vary. Ever watch your dog bury something in the yard? When he's done he urinates probably 6 times or so in the area. Canines are canines.

AJ - do you see any difference in the response at sets when using bought urine as compared to your fox urine (or material with your fox urine on it) ??

But, I think there is a difference. The urine I use is fresh, like from that night. I think it makes alot of difference, so does my dad. Tried some of the dark coffee stuff from a famous urine dealer....... I think it hurt me more then helped

Dear Mr. AJ, I buy fox urine from Carroll Black of Blackies Blend. He freezes the urine to keep it fresh.....when it arrives I add a teaspoon of zinc valerate to the gallon and refreeze until season. Just before season I unfreeze and add some glycerin to slow down evaporation. I too am a big believer in using FRESH urine... Regards papabear

Guys I think this is a good example of ---WHAT WORKS FOR YOU---- The reason I stopped Useing plain urine was I figured I was getting to many unwanted things in my K9 sets----(this was years ago) ---when I stopped useing plain urine ---the number of unwanted things went way down ---and the number of K9's stayed the same ---or some what went up. I dont think theres a guy here who is wrong with there thinking. ---- and use of urine--- ITS JEST THE WAY THEY DO IT----- AND I RESPECT there ways. This thread is a good place for a new trapper to look things over ---- there is a lot of good info here,. Then do what works for them

AJ, Does your own fox urine turn to a much darker color after 24 hours out of the fox? It darkens with age, but much darker in 24 hours no. What I dont understand is how dealers can tote around urine all summer in a trailer and truck. I'm not saying it wont work, but I am saying it's not the same as fresh urine.

Urine is pretty much proteins, salt and water. When the proteins break down, it's nothing more than tainted protein with ammonia being the tell-tale byproduct. imo the smell of spoiled urine is more of a bait type attraction that might even trigger rolling.
Fresh urine and/or preserved urine kept cool/cold is a curiosity scent, which is the desired use for it. Anything that sees hot temps abuse during the summer is more bait than anything.
On a side note, probably the one tactic that upped my quick catches at fox sets was getting in the habit of collecting set-circle debris from trapped reds, storing it in garbage bags and sprinkling around new sets and especially off-target catches like possums and gray fox.
When I'm trapping fox into the season, any set that holds a red gets cleared of most duff on the remake, said duff being sprinkled at other sets down the line. Pretty soon all of my fox sets have some of that material on the bait hole or backing, or on the pattern itself with off-target remakes. Seems to serve the same purpose as urine, imo
