I use urine sparingly at my K9 sets[fox] but I believe the most important thing is location followed by set construction. If you have these two things right you will catch them.I once knew a guy who made all his sets barehanded once cold weather set in and he caught more than his fair share of fox.

austin good post..... you say you move duff on to the next set, than you say it is the same purpose as urine. would not it be better and easier to just squirt a dab of urine on the next set? Instead of worrying about the bag and clean up. Another question....... Do you use the same thing coyote?

There was a time when I carried two sets of gear: fresh sets and remakes equipment so as not to cross-contaminate smells in fresh sets. Then I started clearing duff from catch circles on remakes, read somewhere to spread it around at new sets or off-target remakes so I began doing that. Not something I thought of at all... just another learned tactic from others. So that led to all my sets being sprinkled with red-fox catch circle duff. Whether it's a gray fox or coon or possum or coyote, I add some red fox catch circle material to the set. Same with new sets. I find everything responds well to the natural red fox scents. Urine still has a use, but more as a point of interest attractant than fear eliminator concept. The catch circle duff is free, abundant, fresh and natural once the line gets going strong

This is an awsome thread, with some great information added!! If I'm using straight urine at a Dh, it usually goes on the top lip of the hole! With post sets, well, it goes straight on the post of course. As far as Fresh vs. Aged urine, I prefer fresh bladder urine saved from the fox's I caught in My area. I think it's more natural that way That being said, I don't have a problem using the dark aged urine either, I just prefer the fresher products. Especially when targeting a trapshy critter! One thing I thought about, is using urine usage as a guiding....much like a dropping? didn't give a whole lot of thought into it, just something I was tossing about

Minifoxer, urine can be used as a guide at sets or as a trailing scent to get them to the set.You can use it to line them up on the trap. When you set off the shoulder of a dirt road for example, you can use a trail of urine across the road to stop them and get them to work your set.In fact a good thing to do on logging roads or private dirt roads is a set on each side of the road with a urine trail across the road between the two, either way they trail they run into a set...

Just my take. I like to use it towards the back, behind the hole at times, off to one side. Just me

I use urine as an attractant only, in the hole or on the post-object for flat sets = scent post sets with trap pan back about 8" from there. Between the two, I'd rather have my pan back 10" than 6" from attractant for fox specifically. Crowding the trap to scent results in more missed fox and more non-target catches for me.
fwiw: a charred piece of wood and red fox urine in the snow is a real canine magnet of attraction. Don't know what it is about the charred wood... but fox and coyotes will beeline straight to it for marking.

I heard about the charred wood.. Snow really makes it stand out.. Here is what really sold me on it: Few years back I was testing lures. I put some charred wood out in the back yard. No lure or urine. Took my 2 beagles out for a walk. They saw the wood and made a BEE LINE for it and just HAD to sniff it. The male peed on it and his sis next to it.
