I've used both, and it really depends on what water you'll be covering. Jon boats are great for ponds, marshes, small lakes and very large rivers without a lot of current. A small 12' foot canoe works great in small creeks, beaver flows, etc. where there is current and almost as well as a jon boat in marshes. This is just my opinion and we know what everyone says about opinions ;D

A Radison canoe. Real lightweight. On the many ponds I trap I hook it behind me while walking in water along shore. When water gets too deep I hop in. Great way to carry gear, beaver and a bunch of rats. Also hides my activity.

the water i trap is small to large ponds and large slow moving creek about 30-60 yd wide in spots. i trapped some coon by the creek last year and found more beaver sign then coon sign, the beaver just tore up the corn Field i found at lest 10 trails from the water to the corn, some were wore down a foot or more deep. ;D if you use a canoe what are they (name)

I cannot comment on a canoe but use a jon boat.I have no problem bending over the side to set traps.Lower than a V-bottom to the water which keeps from having to bend way over.Don't know though how stable a canoe is in the same situation. Will find out though.Just got a 15' Coleman canoe for free !!!!

jon boats are nice until you have to squeeze one down a beaver run. I use a canoe myself.

spent the last month trapping out of a canoe...but it really comes down to what you are comfortable in and what water you plan on being on...then are you using a motor, paddle, oars, or a push pole or some combination...many people don't trust working off the side of a canoe...my canoe has a keel...real handy during windy days...a trade off in real shallow waters...round bottom canoe wouldn't have worked in my water but come in handy for running any current...ever been at the mercy of a gusty wind...remember what ever your choice is you will need to be comfortable in it in all weather...everyday...rain...snow...heavy winds...skim ice...slush...somedays it might be over loaded...test your skills and comfort level during the summer months...ice water kills fast

Ive been doing some research on both, the lightest Jon boat is 10' 80lbs, 14' canoe 74lbs, capacity on the Jon boat 350lbs, 850-900lbs on the canoe.Seems like the canoe might be more versabile but don't know how stable they are never been in one. the canoe i was looking at is a old town (guide 147) with a width of 38'' 74lbs, capacity of 850-900lbs

With a canoe depends on how you plan to use it. A wide canoe with a flat bottom has great initial stability (meaning it feels very secure when you climb into it) but if you plan on leaning out to make sets a wide canoe reaches a point of no return and can flip easy. A narrow canoe with a more rounded bottom has low initial stability but great secondary and you can lean out easier without worrying about a rollover. The wider canoe with the flat bottom is more manueverable than a long and narrow canoe. Long canoe handles wind better. Keels limit manuverability. You also want to get a canoe that can be paddled solo....meaning you can sit in the bow seat facing the stern to trim out the canoe properly. If you sit in the stern while paddling solo the bow will stick up and becomes a wind grabber.
My canoes are more set up for canoe camping/expedition/river running. If I was going to purchase a canoe strictly for trapping/hunting I'd look at a Radisson canoe. Can take abuse, have great flotation including flotation on the outside of the canoe to assist against a rollover.

I have a 14' old town osprey. It's very stable. I make sets right out of the canoe. It's light weight. I even have a trolling motor for it when I'm on the bigger creeks around here or up in the Dacks. I got it in 97. It's a great canoe..

One thing to keep in mind,if you are running traps and the weather is cold enough to cause the formation of ice over night, I would think a canoe would be easier to bust through the ice than a boat. Also if you want to slide over floating logs that could be blocking your path I think a canoe would have it over the boat.

I trap out of a 12' Radisson. Love it. Easy for one person to handle. Have had Jon boat in the past; I'll take the canoe.

garyp------ Have you looked at finding an old Sears 12 foot car top---Light easy to handle---wont tip as easy as a jon or canoe----- You got to be careful no matter what you use and ware your vest---I was in a 14 foot V bottom when it tipped over with snow on the banks --- got washed under a tree in high water. You have to be careful all the time---Good luck on your search

has anybody used one of those ice fishing toboggans/sleds to float traps behind them in a marsh ? Just wondering how much they would hold . Thanks Ed

14' canoe, $350 new a bunch of years ago... has hauled countless tons of steel and a few muskrats around since. Floats thru inches of water, easily holds 60 prestaked 160s and 210s or more if I want to ride low. Paddles well standing up, impossible to roll over in quiet water, won't sink if it swamps. Adding a square stern model this fall with 100lb trolling motor attached for local work, mud-motor if it goes out of state. Jon boats are nice and in big waters necessary, but modern canoes are real cheap workhorses. Attachments:

That's what it looks like complete... I always forget what make it is. Rogue River, I know they still sell that exact model for $349 at Gander and Dicks Picture was the first-check spring line near Black Bay on state ground in Hammond month ago Attachments:
