It may be because I do not fully understand the "cable restraint" concept---but every critter I have seen in a picture----in a cable restraint, had expired. What is the difference between a snare and a cable restraint? Let's say I set cable restraint for a fox and have it rigged to close only to about a 4" diameter---like a "leash" as somebody above said. Then a large coonhound, with a 7" diameter neck gets caught? We all know what will happen. No, you really dont know. The purpose of the stop has nothing to do with a choking effect on a canine..it is solely to stop the loop from closing on a deer's lower leg and catching it. That stop known as a deer stop has no purpose whatsoever when it comes to a target catch. As for photos....You are seeing what u want to see... Even here in FULL entanglement, even wild canines never being on a leash in their lives are mostly fine. A domestic canine in a no entanglement situation isnt going to be harmed. I can set here in fully working gun club properties with no worries. The notion that a deer stop at four inches and a dog with a seven inch diameter neck will somehow be inexplicably harmed is crazy. No disrespect intended, but that statement screams ignorance of the tool.

I have no dog in this fight, only wish the best for trappers everywhere. Let the truth and facts prevail, not myth or politics. Doubt I'll ever trap NY. I envy your possible outcome though.. I trap in NJ, Vermont and Pa. Vermont im required to use footholds and here in NJ Im required to use snares. I wish I had a choice of tools rather than being dictated to one or the other. The notion of cable simply being an alternative rather than mandated is terrific if it comes.

Mud, Thanks for shedding some first hand experience on this topic. Education is our ally in this fight. When my local elected offices learned that NJ and PA allowed CR, they were on board almost right away. For those of you that are reluctant to endorse CR out of fear for your hunting dogs, please reach out to other state houndsman organizations and find out about their real life experiences with them. I am confident that you will find very little information confirming your fears. If hunting hounds were being accidentally killed in CR with any regularity, you can bet your ass the CR laws would be gone in a heartbeat.
One final thought, the current bills have a sunset clause. If incidents of accidental hunting dogs being killed are a reality, I am positive the law will be gone.
For you guys that have been trapping for a long time, doesn't it feel good to be on the offensive regarding trapping legislations? All the states fighting off anti trapping bills every year, and here we are trying to expand trapping opportunities. Bobcats, fishers expansions and fighting to keep regulations sensible and now CR. Let's unite and keep the ball rolling together so other states will say NY and NYSTA has their stuff together regards to trapping.

Wcs, when the time comes, if it comes feel free to reach out. I could send you pages of photos like those, mostly even in entanglement with unharmed canines. again, best of luck.
