How many others received the Cornell University Trapper's Harvest survey in the mail ?
Got mine last week and spent a half hour figuring out the responses to the various Questions. (I am sending mine in Today)
I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE that question asking my feelings about opening the Muskrat-Mink-Beaver-Otter Season all on the SAME DATE (November 1st) as to me, that is way too much complication to try and cover all at the same time on the same day.
I like trapping for it's simplicity and lack of complication as it makes it a very relaxing and enjoyable past-time.
Forcing trappers into a limited time frame to make decisions about trapping everything at once simply takes the relaxation and enjoyment factor right out of it.
Trapping is competitive enough already without turning it into a marathon race on opening day for all species with the added pressure of having to do everything at once, and not being able to take one's time if a trapper wants to target each species.
Life is Fast paced and pressure filled enough without having to experience those issues on Our Trap-line too.
One of the Main reasons We trap is to escape the Everyday, Grinding Rat Race of Life, and this proposal of every water species opening on the same day would rob us of some of the intrinsic value that trapping provides us.
Too many trap types and numbers to carry in the canoe and not enough time in a day to be able to do all species justice at once.
I like the water seasons fine just the way they are. (My Two cents)
I don't want to give up a whole week of water trapping season because it is trapping time we will never get back, and what if we get an early freeze-up.....then we in the Northern Zone are out of Luck.
I wonder How many trappers will NOT respond to this Annual Survey and just pitch it in the circular file due to distrust of DEC and NYS State Government in general.
Maybe we could ask Wayne and company to initiate a POLL on ITRAPNY asking each Member if they support a later opener in the Northern Zone for Mink and Muskrat.
I heard the NYSTA Trapper's Newsletter last year had a poll where NYSTA members supported a later northern zone opener but I did not get a survey so I was unable to vote on it.
I heard no info on how many surveys were sent out, or what the % percentage rate of response was.
I only heard that a majority of those WHO RESPONDED were in favor.
Since we only have less than 25% of New York State Trappers as NYSTA members, and since we may not have a statistical majority of those who did respond, and with the poll being unscientific, it probably means nothing.
I'd wager that the majority of ALL TRAPPERS in New York State's NORTHERN ZONE, whether they belong to NYSTA or not, are not in favor of a later opener and correspondingly SHORTER SEASON, and that many of the respondents to Last year's NYSTA newsletter poll were southern zone trapper who do not even trap the Northern zone, but yet want parity or fairness in what they see is an inequity in season lengths, and thus, are all for a shorter Northern Zone season because it would be("MORE FAIR")
