Usually between $5 - $10, plus if you extract the essence that's another $10 or so. So yes skunks, are really worth trapping espicially since 'coons are only around $10 or so this year.

After you skin the skunk you will see the oil glands, they are yellowish in color, on either side of the anus. You will need a needle, since needles aren't allowed without a permit in NYS, I don't know where you will get one. Anyway, you can put the whole gland in a container and save it that way as well. If you have a needle, insert it in the back part of the gland, at a angle toward the biggest part. Start to draw the essence out slowly, apply a little pressure to the gland with your finger as it gets smaller, just enough to get the essence flowing into the needle tip. Once you have finished with the first one, go on to the second.

In NYS you need a certificate of need. This allows a person to posses a hypodermic needle. If you get caught with a needle you will be classified as a drug user and treated as one. Just one of the screwed up laws in NY. You can use the whole gland for lure usage. If you rot the gland down you have a great fixative known as sweet musk. It has a similar to muskrat glands with a slight skunky smell to it. I read this in Russ Carmans book on lure "making musk mystery and misconceptions." or you can cut up the hole gland for fisher lure. Dave

Hatch, If your going to be trapping near your house, it might be a good idea to either use cubby or bucket sets with 220 conibears or use live trap to save you alot of stink in the future. I catch lots of skunks each year in live traps without any stink. Conibears will make some skunks spray. its nice to find them dead but if they sprayed, its less essence you have to sell. Almost forgot, if you plan on skinning a skunk, cut the tail bone without stripping the tail. If you try to strip it like a coon or fox you will get sprayed if you squeeze the skunk wrong. Remove the tailbone AFTER you finish skinning it ( Thankyou Red Knot for this advice)

Hatch ya seem like a very smart young man. Good thinking on your part not using the conis. Some folks would just set em anyway and not care. I think the live trap idea has alot of merit and i wouldnt give up on that idea ;D

Hatch, When you set your Box trap, place a thin board on the treadle to make a ramp that the animal has to walk up to reach the bait. I have had skunks and coon reach over the treadle to steal the bait. I use an old wood shingle or a piece of 1/4 inch plywood. Good luck. Dave

Skunks are use to eating junk food. Bait your live traps with mcdonalds or other fast food. I catch most my skunks using mcdonalds or burgerking burgers

I've seen so many skunks this year, it simply isn't funny. I know there are different types of skunks, but I haven't had much luck in identifying the kind in my area.
