I pulled into an area I had planned on setting some beaver sets today. We have about 8 inches of snow already on the ground here in western ny. I should mention that this fall the farmer decided to plow the fields this fall instead of waiting for spring.
I pull in, lock the truck in 4x4 & proceed to drive the long way back in. There's not much margin on each side of this driveway or your in the fresh plowed field (which means STUCK).
I did get about 3/4 of the way back to where the beavers are but could feel how soft the ground was. I had already gone through 2 spots that I was surprised I made it through & was worried I would not get back out. Needless to say, I said the heck with that location, because I know I'd be walking a LONG ways before this was all said & done.
I did manage to get back out, but it was rough going. I spot I sunk in about 1 1/2 feet (in the driveway). I never let up, if I did I'd still be sitting there. I do have another location to check out, but it's a bit further from the house & the weather man is calling for more snow !
This is when I wish we had a much longer beaver season instead of only 2 weeks !!!

I know the feeling, at least you have the option of driving in. All my beaver locations are a 1-2 mile walk in and then again back out, I need to find some closer to the road ;D

I'd walk in that far, but after having my left hip replaced 5 years ago there's no way I could walk that far carrying stuff in, let alone carrying beaver out.

I can't imagine how that must have hurt, I have a hard time carrying the stuff in and the beavers out and I have 2 good hips. Well, maybe not good, but they still are both mine

This cold weather doesn't help much, but I keep going. Since this surgery, it really has slowed me down. Last season was nice & I could drive right into this location. Not now unless we get a warm spell in this wonderful 2 week season.

sounds like it's time for a snowmobile. I got my first one this year. It is going to help getting into some nice beaver territory....as well as a lot of fun trail riding......my wife even said we should get another so we can ride together......sounds like a great idea to me!!!!!!!!!!!!! We can even take the kids with us!!!!!!!!!!

You need to get a 4wd ATV of some sort Tim and leave that truck at the road, easier to get un-stuck too than a pick-up. I feel your pain though about our short season on the beaver. Even if it wasn't any longer at least they could make it latter in the year. Being that it runs right on the holidays and all .

trapperjohn, There's many on this site that only have the 2 week long season on Beavers. I know myself & Bobber are in that boat. Like Wayne said, 1 word "otters" is the reason for our wonderful season. Not to mention the new regulation has slowed many down as well. I was looking at the DEC map & noticed just south of me that the season is much longer. Kinda makes me wonder because I know there's Otters there as well. Sometimes I wonder what our DEC is thinking.

Tim, back about 15 years ago, we only had 1 week, and about 20 years ago, we had no beaver season! So I am not sure if the otters have anything to do with it, or just "projected" beaver populations.

Region 7 season runs almost 5 months. We still have the 330 regulation, but does that mean we have more beaver?
Most of the otter project funding came from Region 8. Figure it out, just my opinion. Dale

Sounds like its similar to how insurance companies influence how many deer permits get issued in a WMU.
