What size ( width) do most of you use to put up red fox? The reason for me asking is Im going to use wood this year and seems like Im finding different sizes from NAFA and Fur Harvesters. Do you put all red fox on the same size board no matter the size? For example would you but a LGE 28"32"on a 6" board or 6 1/2" or a sm-med on a 6" and the Large on a 6 1/2" or both on the same size board no matter the pelt size.
NAFA says small is 6 1/2" Large is 7" at base Fur Harvesters says 5 1/4" at base(seems too skinny)
Is it all just a personal preference?
Thanks

I just like the wider NAFA measurement. Not really important but it looks good to me. Lots of fox are done on wire stretchers and these are far from matching any board measurements but they still sell without any problems.

You are right, wire is the worse way to put up a fox and for that matter mink on wire are the ultimate worse. Jim

what is it about wire that alot of ppl dont like ? i have put up fox and coon on wire alot say they would look better on wood some dont beleave wood is better ? iam a new trapper last year and had a small catch but had alot of fun . hope to do more fur next year . i have a saw mill and can cut my own basswoood or soft pine if wood is actuly better for the value of the fur but if it is a matter of prefrance i think ill keep getting my stretchers for upcoming season from the flea markets and amish mall ? what is better about wood other than you can pleat on a wood board ?

Each fur is uniform, no under or overstretching. It's easier to pin the ears flat, open the tails as well as being able to keep the bottoms even easier on wood than on wire too. All the furs I put up on wood seem to be fuller as well. Selling fur is a lot about appearance, and if you have well handled pelts that show that a person took time to honor the critter it came from, you'll usually receive a premium on it as well.

i made my own boards last year out of basswood , i found out that this year was easier than the year before as to get the sizes with wire i had to bend & reform the metal to get what i wanted , with the wood boards pull down , tack down all done. will be making more as soon as i cut down the 3 basswood trees a friend gave me.

keep away from using pine of any kind. It tends to bleed pitch when it warms up

Thanks, for the input. It seems like it is just a personal pref. I have some 6 1/2" boards at the base, and put all red fox on those to keep a uniform look. Thanks again

And the world passes us by. Five million ranch fox are put up on one standard stretcher. Maybe ask yourself why? Hint it has nothing to do with personal prefernce. Jim

Gibb, does it matter if a fox on a NAFA board is sent to FHA? I mean will the trapper see a reduction in price? For whatever reason, most boards sold around here a NAFA pattern. I've looked for FHA pattern boards before. They are a rare find.
