Toward the end of season,my SD Bait started to develop a white mold on the surface. It wasn't affecting the odor,scrape it off and everything was the same. What would cause this? Could it be an air born spore,similar to bread mold. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Ed what could be done to prevent it in the future?

Sounds like a bread type mold, it may have been caused by opening and closing it combined with moisture or the introduction of a foreign body to it. It may have been alos that you didn't put quite enough preservative in it too. Either way, that bait worked awesome Ed....I didn't have enough left over mold ;D

I too was wondering about long term preservation of bait also. In fact as I write this am aging some venison scraps to make bait for next year. I have posted on a couple of different forums and asked a couple of people and there is quite a difference of opinion on just how much perservative to add to bait. Does the sodium benzoate prevent mold ? Or does it just fix and stabilize the bait at a certain degree of taint? I'm thinking that mold would form anyways unless the container was completely airtight. Only thing is it might blow up the jar if airtight as long as the bait was gasing. I was wondering if a layer of wax could be poured over the top of the bait to seal the jar like when you make homemade perserves, and would then exclude air and inhibit mold formation? Maybe this would be more forgiving if the bait was still working. Perserves made this way do not mold until the wax is removed and then it takes awhile. I'm making a couple of gallons and wouldn't probably use all of it in one season, so preservation is a important thing to me. I think that the formation of mold would in the long run do two things. One it would consume the bait in the jar, and two , what it didn't eat up would be possibly less effective.
