I have recently read an article involving an otter set being used for lobster pot raiding otter. It is the bucket set but set vertically and submerged with some weight at the bottom of the bucket and a fish wired to the rocks/bottom of the bucket. Has anyone any experience with this set? This pic is a bit deceiving. The top of the bucket is about 2 1/2 feet below the suface. WoW

This sets been talked about quite a bit lately. I've never tried it but sounds like it would be worth a shot. In the Dec. issue of T&P Caller, Jim Spencer mentions it as a good set at the mouth of feeder streams. I don't think he'd mention it if he didn't have some luck with it. I've got a spot in mind I may try it next season.
BTW, there must be a story behind your WoW handle?

Hi Jim, I think it is an interesting set. I only had a filleted perch to use as bait. Tomorrow I will be baiting it with fresh sunnies. I am also going to try the same set but place the bucket horizontally with the open end downsteam. I might get really creative and cut the bottom off a bucket and bait the trigger for a horizontal set. Sorry, no real story behind the name. It is just a term a friend and I use when fishing early ice.

No luck to this point with the submerged buckets. The warm weather and rain has had the levels up and today I walked the creek and found last nights otter tracks. He must have swam by my bucket to get there! I have noticed that the otter tends to favor small strips of sand that are on the inside edge of bends. I put a couple of land buckets on the sign. We shall see! Only four days left!

Throw in a dirt hole set for the otter on the sandbar!

Have used these sets a lot on Lake George; on the bottom of boathouse slips. Otters are a problem on the lake as they come up onto the decks of the boathouses and regurgitate their scales. Have had very limited luck; have not caught many for all of the effort. The color of the bucket seems to matter, with white seeming to better attract otters than other colors. Years ago we used to attract them with the old fashioned white door knobs. A couple of years ago I caught one in a suspended conibear, baited with poplar, under ice beaver set. I'm convinced the otter was attracted by the white artificial bite marks that I have made, as it was not in a narrow location. I've had better luck by placing a large fish (perch, sucker, or bullhead) on the trigger wires of a 280, hung by one spring so that the fish is in a horizontal position, and suspended through the ice. I'm convinced that location is the key and that these sets must be placed wher you know otters to travel.

Looks like it would work to me, I just wish we could set for them.

I assume fish as bait in the dirt hole?

Fish will work and a good lure to bring them in.

I've got a pile of perch racks and some of Asas super all call. I'll get on'em in the AM. Darn rain might kill my last chances though! We shall see.

The otter came by again last night. He does not want anything to do with submerged or dryland buckets. This strip of sand seems to be one of his favored haunts. I set a dirt hole this morning on this sand right where he comes out of the water. using a large sunny as bait with some of Asas finest. Only three days left! WoW

Looks like an excellent place for a natural cubby in the upper left hand corner of the bottom picture. Looks like the tracks are heading right for it

Is there a possibility of putting in a bottom edge set?

A bottom edge set would be nice but the water is nearly 5ft and movin pretty fast. The banks are radically undercut as well. I found an old dam out in the heavy foxtail with a crossing this afternoon. I set it and a number of other potential crossing sets. It was the first time in this marsh that I plowed through the cat and foxtail. The dams are only about 8 inches high and circular. They form kind of like tidal ponds really cool. I will have pics tomorrow.
