iam in need of some much needed help . i have been trying sence season started for the k 9's and latly beaver under the ice . i have had very little to no luck . seems the local trappers around my area dont want to help me they have told me to learn from my mistakes . wich im ok with that but money is tight for most at this time. i have learned alot butt iam still lacking what it takes to seal the deal. some trappers have misguided me and told me so afterwords . i have read and done a huge amount of research and have good eqiupment . with little know how. if there is a honest trapper in steuben county that is willing to talk to me and possibly take me along on there line that would be great !! i am a fast learner and can give a helping hand . trapping is an adiction and have no thoughts of given up. my 8 year old son has passed his trapping course this fall . i would love to keep him interested and trapping be a passion for him and my self any help would be great thnks

Welcome to the Forum and I'm sure you'll get a lot of help and advice here. I'm sorry for your recent struggles with the trappers in your area, I'm sure they're not members of this Forum as everyone here is willing to share. We have several trappers in Steuben County, do you live in Northern part6 of the county or the Southern? YOu can alos ask any questions you may have on the Forum under trappers talk and I know you'll get a quick and straight forward answer.

you have had a rough year ,sorry about the loss of your traps. Are you setting on sign? How many traps, what kind of sets? and are you the only one setting the properties?Trapped out/thin fox and coyotes can be very difficult. You can learn the basics on here and the basics will catch you fur.Not sure why anyone would steer you wrong on $10 k-9 s.put up some pics of your sets ,locations and set on tracks they will come thru again within feet or even same trail.good luck

i dont have sets out now . i wanted to figur out my problem befor i put all the k9 in my area thru collage and show them everything i know lol i pulled them . i have used the dirt hole , hole being 12 inches deep and very in size from 4 inch to 6 to 8 across . i always use some kind of atractor from a big rock or a shoulder blade from the pasturei have trapped . i have also used flat sets . when snow falls i can see from a distance the k9 were working the back side of the set more than the down wind side with my trap gaurding the hole. i always pick a location if i can ! so the wind is working over the set in the direction the k9 are comeing from. i have had the same fox walk by my set day after day and dont even look at my set and yotes come in and get 4 to 5 feet away then leave up wind of the set. i know its the same fox because he drags his right hind foot with every step . i work the wind much like i would hunting deer i know how important it is. i have tryed the speed dip on about 20 of my #2 victors and die and wax on the other 30 some are 1.75 dukes .all my traps are night latched and set with a 1.5 lbs pan tension i boiled and hung to dry at my cabin did everything outside with propane. the speed dip shows little diff from the wax i did manage to get my first red 3rd day of season on a speed dipped offset # 2 victor but sence then i been empty with every check maybe a grinner now and then. i have also use the flat set they always work the upwind side of my set so i remake a set and try to play there game and they either dnt show or they come close then leave going into the wind . and as far as some one misguiding me i dnt understand it either other than he said he wont give out his secrets and i need to learn on my own .!!

Snow is humbling ;D It sounds as if you're certainly on the right track in regards to using the wind in your favor and if you're seeing tracks you're on location and have the critters to catch. Those are the first 2 questions I ask everyone if they're having a hard time catching K-9's. K-9's aren't all that smart, they may avoid a certain type set , or smell, because of a bad experience at one similar in the past, but they aren't smart. You said that caught a red fox earlier in the season, think back and see if you did anything different at that set than you're doing now? If they aren't even working your sets or approaching them for that matter, they may not be interested in what you're offering. What are you using for lure and/or bait? You said that you speed dipped some traps and dyed & waxed the others, have they been contaminated since you dyed and waxed them with any strong odors? Sometimes the attractor can be too big, can they see over it? I know that you stated that you we settting with the wind in your favor, but the wind doesn't always blow in the same direction. On the days that they worked your sets or you saw fresh tracks near your sets, was the wind in your favor those days? Do you have other trappers in the same area that you're trapping? If so, I hate to say it but maybe they tampered with your sets.... It's getting late in the season and if you can't get out with somebody this year, I encourage you to try and attend a convention or two this summer and take in a couple demo's and pick the brains of other trappers firsthand

ty for the reply again so much help here i have been useing a gland lure with a splash of urin in some locations. i have used some bait that was bought at ackley's hawbakers it was full of castor and other mixes im sure it said to use with a glad lure so i did . at my flat sets i used hawbakers long distance call #600 i have used just urin at flat sets aswell. i have some lures that another trapper gave me and they all showed no sign of activity around sets . some of them smelled like dish soap and even suds up like dawn dish soap would ?? some of the others smelled keroseen. at this piont is when i pulled my traps . if i have contaminated traps ill have to wait till next year wich is ok sence iam not in this just to bragg or to just kill fur . i want to get it right and be successfull . the traps have never come in contact with anything strong or smelly that i can tell i am very anal about my traps prolly to much after haven these problems my thoughts were that it was sent or human odor even tho i know in the back of my mind its prolly not the case. my attractors are small and very natural to there surroundings and yes they can be seen over by the k9 . i have put befor season deer skulls larger rocks and some kind of stump out befor season in the spring of 2009 where i found sign when scouting and when makeing a new set at a new location i would choose a near by back stop for my set. to be honest when checking my traps after makeing a set i did not recall every day what the wind direction was at that time of day eary morning . yes there is a couple of long line trappers close to me and i have even trapped the same privat property as one of them when i found out they were there i pulled my line it was a short line anyway. i am gun shy now with other ppl do to the traps i have had stolen and fur taken from a set . that was after bow season started . so if you count my catch if i had them on a stretcher it would have been 2 k9 . i have had ppl kick a set to hell and walk away in the snow when i follow there tracks they go to a road and drive away. and this was on my land not public or a privat land owner i was trapping on . so i know i have had some other problems with human activity at sets other ppl was not a problem every day i would go a week or more with haven a problem with some one at my set.

Sounds like a lure problem more than anything else to me. By some quality lure for next season, tak in a few demos this simmer if you can and I'm sure you'll be able to find a few trappers in your area willing to help you.

i couldn't be your mentor because i haven't trapped yet. no courses until spring. i have been reading books trying to learn as much as i can. this website is great for that. i live in steuben county. in corning. i keep bees as a hobby and the landowner said i could trap there or have someone else trap there.maybe we could get together and i could show you the place. if you want to put out some sets i could tag along and watch. can't do anything to help till i take my course in the spring. i know there are sometimes yotes there because i saw two of them. and i have seen foxes too. is see lots of folks on this website like to use night owl lures. there website is nightowllures.com check it out and have them send you one of there catologs. they sent me one and prices look good. if you're interested send me a message

Hey cabinfever- I have been following this thread but haven't said anything yet. A year ago I hadn't a clue on what I was doing until I found the guys and gals on this program. If it wasn't for the Outdoor News article with Wayne (Itrapny) in it, I would have never know about it. I have met some incredible friends on here, guys that I trust and respect, guys that I would have never known if it wasn't for this. I am glad to hear you got a fox. These guys won't treat ya wrong, that's for sure. I am sorry to hear about your problems with other guys but you found a good home. Congrats on the fox, and here to many more.
