Gonna give it a try . Those fox today were as mess , wet , muddy , sticktights , burrdocks , the works . here goes: 1. a before shot , dirty fox! 2. After a good washing and tumbling ( still full of burrdacks ) 3. alsmost there , they were still damp so I cleaned the fur well w/ a fur comb and tumbled them a bit longer . 4. a good coating of borax on the whole flesh side of the pelt , then work the ears inside out w/ my fingers .the next few pics are in order as i go . whats left I trim off w/ a sharp knife leaving a much smaller hole . end results

No I don't like staples BUT all those aluminum push pins have somehow melted Yep! no turning , a good fleshing job and a couple belly boards keep them from sticking . I did have one this week that gave me fits taking it off the board . The dog is home , Fudd and the lab pup went runabout from 5am. til 9:30pm. that day . they haven't moved much since and they have some RAW feet , I reckon Fudd ran into the coyote thats been coming into the yard and just couldn't help himself! ;DThanks for the compliment.

I am still blown away by how beautiful those furs look when they come out of the tumbler.

Von I tried the borax and putting on board fur side out and had some issue getting it off, So I still turn them after a day. Although I don't tumble them , still haven't got one yet. Maybe next year.
2 more mink today, they just love to run on those snowy nights.

When referring to the tumbler, some guys have old dryers and barrels that they fill with sawdust and tumbler their fur in, much like running it through a dryer. As for washing it, I personally use dish soap and hair conditioner, or baby soap, as I got a lot of that on hand. I like the conditioner better because it makes the fox look really nice.

Is it only filled with sawdust? and not actually added heat?

You skin / finger the ears out to the end then rub the borax on them? never done that, I just clean all meat of ear butts and do the normal flip after mostly dried. Als, you pin them ears forward?

hanging all canines upside down, for me, makes for a better, fluffier hide AND precludes me from pinning the ears forward.
Give and take.....upside down, one needs to pin the tails.

what is the purpose of the borax ? How do you find an old working dryer ?

Borax is a drying agent as well as a preserative to an extent. Old dryers can be found on the side of the road or in the newspaper classfieds. No need for heat, as long as it goes round and round it's all you need

Nice furs and great info.
I'll ask a stupid question because I don't have a tumbler. For me, it's skin, flesh, wash, board inside out, turn and comb while boarded fur out.
What order to you go?
Skin, Wash, Tumble, Flesh, Board or Skin, Flesh, Wash, Tumble, Board or something else?
Part of the reason I ask is because I wonder about the tumbling, as it seems like the wood shavings would get wet and/or damp. Do the pelts go in damp/wet and come out relatively dry? If you wash and tumble first, how do you get the small bits of fat off of the fur edges while fleshing?
Finally, any preference on solid or adjustable stretchers?

We are new to the tumbling business this year.
We comb, skin, tumble, (sometimes freeze) flesh then board. We don't wash, takes too much time for us.... We swap out the sawdust after a few uses. The used sawdust is used on the floor to soak up blood, fat, etc etc....
The furs look/feel so much nicer when tumbled................
Adjustable stretchers on K9's all the way for us!!!

To add to Vons post after rinsing the conditioner out I give them a 10 second swish in a bucket of laquer thinner. This removes any residual grease in the fur and skin and cuts tumbling time in half because it evaporates moisture. I tumble in 1/3 sawdust and 2/3 corncob grit with some borax thrown in. The corncob realy does a nice job on finer furs. Then I put them on the stretch and hit them with the blower. POOF!!!
