I've been working on another diver to add to my spread. I really like the looks of the old Stratford, Conn. decoys, so this is from one of their patterns. It has a hollow cedar body with a white pine head. The cedar came from a neighbor's tree that I found laying in the road during an ice storm about 5+ years ago. I'm going to paint this one up as an oldsquaw.

Very nice! And would like to see a photo when it's all painted. Is the body hollow just to reduce weight?

Thanks. The bodies are hollowed to make them lighter and more visible because they float higher. A solid wood decoy floats quite a bit lower than a hollow one.

have you ever made one for the NYSTA auction or raffle??? Not yet, but I wouldn't mind doing it. The only thing is I'm slow so it would be better to plan for having it next spring. Any species requests?

Thanks woj. Those are some nice carvings. I like that broadbill, it has the St. Lawrence style. Great table too.

Those are both good ones. I'm partial to the divers.

Here it is all done. The clear coat made it a little shiny but I think it'll tone down after a few hunts.

Almost too nice to use in the field! Thanks. At first I felt a little hesitant sticking them in the water. But soon I realized it was better than sticking them on the shelf. It's a blast watching birds work to them. I still put one or two of them on a shelf during the off season. The wear and occasional shot hole just give them character.
