Glycerine and 100 proof vodka to preseve the castor. try this link there many recipes in the archives-- www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forum_summary.html . This came from a nytrapper member - Mix the sac oil with some ground castor to make a paste. You can use it for beaver but also makes a good change up for K9's! As far as mixing with something for coon, I would mix the ground castor with some cherry essence oil, or use it straight, without anything added. Every furbearing animal is attracted to beaver castor. As for what to do with your castor, after removing from the beaver, make sure you remove as much of the red membrane as possible. Then, hang it over a nail or string to dry. Let it dry for one or two days then turn it over so the spot where it was touching will dry. Then I put it in the freezer until I am ready to grind. I use an old fashion hand food grinder. I first remove the top area where the 2 castors are attached, as this can sometimes be tough to grind. Add a little glycerine or glychol, and you are ready to go. Just put it in a sealed container, like a Cool Whip container to keep it from drying out. It will last for years! Hope this helps some ,any more questions fire away .What you are looking for is out there someplace.

Had this one saved from someone ,havnt tried it yet ---
the best is what I make! I'll share with you. Take a well dried large castor and grind it up into a powder.Mix it with one qt. of molasses you buy at the feed store. Then heat to a simmer for 3 hours. Do this in a glass jar and a pot with water. Use a good once at a set, but set your traps deep or they will be full of coon. Don't forget to let a little run in the water so you will have a trail of the scent down stream. WARNING THIS WILL HAVE A DEVASTATING EFFECT THE BEAVER POPULATION

Marshkeeper: Ya know you can make some great lure with that beaver castor and some (easy to find) spices---- all-spice ---nutmeg--to name a couple. You might have a good time.

Mix ground beaver castor and alcohol (100 proof vodka) until it is the consistancy of mustard. I like to use a 50:50 mix of vodka and glycerine.
To 4 oz of this mixture, add 30 grains crushed spiceberries. A reloading scale can be used to weight the correct amount.
Spiceberries grow on the spicebush plant...very common in bottomland areas.
Not a magic lure or anything, but it is neat to catch a beaver on a lure the mountain men used and you can make yourself from ingredients easily obtained from nature.

dug through some stuff and found it...
In a 4oz jar mix beaver castor and vodka (the mountian men probably used rum) until it is the conisitancy of mustard. Then add one nutmeg (ground), 12-15 ground cloves, and 30 grains ground cinnamon and mix well.

Thank you ----I have used that lure for more than 30 years---- doing research ---on the original formuls I found that rum was not the drink of choice on that party. (Lewis and Clark) P.M. to follow.

I use castors and empty the cpontents of the stomach and large intestine. It has a woody fermented smell. Mix together with some glycerin and it is killer lure. It is a combo lure...gland and food all in one.

I think the Lewis and Clark formula is missing glycerine .
