I have trapped yotes for two years now and have hand no luck with footholds. I've used commercial lures and baits, with dirt holes, flat sets, sent post, and the step down set, and still no luck. Can anyone here give me some tips on what to do here? I have no idea why I have no success with footholds. Thanks in advance.

Are you getting tracks in the pattern or having them work your sets at all?

Yes, I have had tracks go right by like they stopped investigated a little bit then kept going. then on a flat set there were some droppings by it, then it was tripped another time. I had a sent post type set where I took a bunch of old bones and made a lil pile of them and squitred some urine on it, and they scratched it up but would never step on the pan. I think part of the problem is that they run a huge area and the scent isn't there when they get there. Any hardcore yote trappers out there willing to help.

Trust me, the scent was still there when they came back through again. I've come back months later and had 'yotes digging at old set locations, their nose is unbelievablke. That may be part of the problem, sometimes if you use too much lure at the set it tends to shy them away for a while or even to roll on the sets. Do you use bait & lure, or lure only? I like to use bait as I think it holds their interest a bit longer. Coyotes are finicky at times too, I've seen where they'll walk by a set for days and then all of a sudden work it. How far back is the pan from the attractor? I try to keep mine back about 8" or so.

I think I might have too much lure, I never knew I didn't need that much. How much should I use then? I keep my pan at about that distance. Most of the time I just used lure, but I have used both. I Got on the Night Owl site and put some things in the shopping cart that I wanted and it toalted $237, so Im gonna be doing a lot of working this summer.

I only use what will stick on a wooden matchstick size twig or if using a paste bait, a piece about the size of a pea or lima bean. For bait, I use a piece about the size of an unshelled walnut and when I do use urine, which isn't that often, I just give a small squirt out of a squeeze bottle. A K-9's nose will find it, no matter how little you use if you're on location and the wind is in your favor.

So just dip a small stick in the lure and drop it in the dirt hole, or place it on the backing.

What about cutting some Q-tips in half and dipping them in the lure and doing the same?

Q-tips make great lure holders and have great eye appeal as well.

shoot a small animal and skin and make your step down set and make so you can tuck the animal back in the hole so the coyote has to work to get it out and you picking up your fist coyote i did that. this is my fist year trapping and i did that a got my fist the third day of the season

You think grinding up mice might work the same too.

There are quite a few baits & lures on the market that use ground mice as a base, so yes, it will work great.

the most productive set for me here is a post set ! make all those other sets and 20 yards or so away put in a real nice post set w/ sapring use of of some good urine , seems to nail them MOST every time.
