Best choice is based on need & affordabilty, but I would get a quality knife from the start. There are many good knives out their, I use a Necker, but Zeph's & Post's are good as well. There are many different dealers that advertise, both on here and in trapping magazines but many times your bets bargain can be found at a trapping convention.

Thanks for the reply. As mentioned we're not trappers. I found a fleshing knife from the AllPredator web site it's a cheap one, $18.95. I would rather buy local or from a dealer in New York. Could you PM with a phone # and time to call? When( not if) we connect we'll be sending pelt out to be done. What will be needed to be done to the skin (other than removing from body) before we ship or take it someplace. 1der

What will be needed to be done to the skin (other than removing from body) before we ship or take it someplace. 1der That depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are just going to get the hide tanned, your best bet is to case out the fur, scrap the hide best you can, and get it to the taxidermist or local tannery. If you are planning on a full body mount, I wouldn't skin it at all. I would bring the whole animal to the taxidermist. Of course, a lot has to deal with the personal preference of the taxidermist. I used to help out a local taxidermist and I know he preferred the animals to come in whole. The best bet would be to contact who ever it is that will be doing the work and ask them what they suggest. Hope this helps. . . at least a little.

no matter which knife you get, make sure it is a double edge blade. Dont waste your money on a single edge blade, you will regret it. I started with a single edge knife and worked my arms off trying to make it do a good job. A double edge knife is the way to go.
