Why do they use basswood for strechers? Is it because it's light or what. Can you use like pine of some other wood?

Basswood is soft, has very few knots and is easy to work with. You can use pine, but basswood seems to have a straighter grain and push pins go in & out very easily.

pine has too many knots and once it gets warm, the sap runs out around them
