The most important thing is to have any and all oils off the trap. After that the amount of rust isn't that important, your traps will dye up with only spotty rust but may take longer in the dye solution and may not take on as heavy (lasting) of a coating. But get em dyed and get em out there! If for footholds, waxing is the most important aspect.

You can wash them in dawn dish detergent, or even in your dishwasher if you have one. Just be sure to run it through a full cycle without dishes to clean it though. I boil mine in lye and then hose them off and then dye & wax them.

Where can you buy lye now ? My wife sometimes used it for making soap , but has had a hard time getting it now because of government regulations. I guess the doppers are using it to make some kind of drugs now in their meth labs. and its really hard to get in our area.
