Buck shot is a cheaper alternative to dead coyote, works well. If you are calling a mix bag it can be quite costly using them on fox and coon.I like and have good success with 3 " number 4 buck using a full choke. 41 pellets ,each pellet is equal to a .270 bullet . Will travel the full length of intended target.good luck.

I haven't had a chance to use a shotgun yet because all of my coyote hunting has been in open range. However, I have a new opportunity this year where it's close quarters and fox are as much a possibility as coyotes in many places. That being said, I got out the 3" 12 ga. turkey gun and have tried #4 buckshot and BB Reminton HD using a turkey super full choke. The #4 at 40 yards was amazing, but not as good with the BB. I think maybe a full only choke may work better. If you try the #4 buck make sure you get the buckshot, not just #4 shot that you might use for turkeys. Make sure you test out your loads on a paper target first - it's worth the effort. There is an extensive thread on coyote shotgun loads at this link: www.predatormastersforums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=52640363&an=0&page=0#52640363Good luck.

I can't say that this is the best load as I dont normally hunt coyotes but did shoot a nice one with #2 steel shot. I got incredible penetration and was very impressed. I will use this load again.
For what it's worth I was turkey hunting and was using #2 steel shot that had been left over from the previous waterfowl season.
Just my little story.
Good luck and have fun
