I just got a lever action. Nice gun and shoots good. I have problems with the new hornady lever-revolution ammo. They dont seem to go into the magazine well. Normal? Whats a solid max range for whitetail. 150 200 yds. Its scoped out but looks like it looses alot of energy around 200. Close to or under 900 foot pounds. Anyone use for coyote?

A 30-30 has killed more deer than any other gun around. The new ammo should be good up to 200 yards other wise I would keep it around 100-150. Practice at those ranges to see how much the bullet drops. I know at 150 I have to hold my 12 gauge about a foot high. Good luck.

my dad owns a 30-30 lever action. best hunting gun i have found yet. killed my first deer with it. i have found that at 150 yards i have little bullet drop but 175 and up the bullet drops rapidly. but that is what i have found and i might be shooting a smaller grain than you are.

As Spike said, the 30-30 has probably killed more deer than any other caliber. I shot my first rifle killed buck with my Marlin 336 I got for my 16th B'day. And my son shot his first rifle killed buck with the same gun, 30+years later. My 30-30 has dropped every buck in it's tracks from 15 yards out to 125-150 yards, all in the woods, except for maybe a handfull that went a little ways and dropped or ran into a tree. They were dead, they just didn't know it yet. Like any rifle caliber, bullet placement is important. Don't be fooled by the lever-revolution. They do add distance to the standard 30-30 trajectory, but that does not add accuracy. Not to mention the price tag on them. Most of the old 30-30's had short barrels, not designed for accuracy. More for quick handling and fast, close in shooting. There are some manufacturers presently building guns for the 30-30 lever-revolution, but for the price you would pay for a new one, you can go out and buy a really nice rifle in alot better caliber than the 30-30. What I found with my 30-30 is to go down to Walmart, Dicks, or Gander Mntn. and buy a box of Rem., Win., and Fed.'s, Hornady, etc. all in the same bullet weight. Pick 2 or 3 brands that are on sale all the time. I recommend the 150's to the 180's. The deer won't know the difference, trust me. Set up 3 targets and shoot each brand at it's own target. You will find that every rifle "likes" or has it's own preference. My gun hates Rem. ammo. But Feds. are closer and Win. will get a 2-3 inch group every day. My son's Win. 94 with a long octagon barrel likes the Feds. better than the others. I don't know why, but I have played with off the shelf ammo for years and have found this to be the case with every rifle I own. My present choice is an old Savage 99F in .308 I picked up a few years back. It will touch holes with off the shelf Win. Silvertips, but with the Rem. PSP's it's all over the paper.
