Good luck in the mornin' guys! I have to wait till wednesday. Ditto on being safe out there. Can't Imagine getting 100$ on Top of a 23lb bird with a 15" bird; that would be a real mind blower!

Guess I'm the first to report. I missed one at alittle after 8:00. I was tired after getting out of work at 7:00 and almost didn't go but Im glad I did. On the drive up I took a spin around to see who else is hunting. Drove right up on one before it crossed the road. I backed up about 100 yards and got out and dressed. I walked up to where he was. I thought he was gone but I got 15 yards from him and he took off. I got to my hunting spot where I took my bird last year. As I put my vest on a hen ran across the road. Now I'm pumped. I get in and set up and have a bird going nuts. Took him fifteen minutes before he came in. He hung up just out side my range. He looked everything over and didn't like what he saw. He turned and started to leave so I took what I thought was a 45 yard shot and missed. It was more like 55 yards. I'm happy I called one in. I'll be back out friday morning. Hope everyone had some action.

Went out on the 2nd on a friends land in Whitestown,NY. Didn't do any scouting & the turkeys just weren't there. At least not like they were in March. It's somewhat amazing how a field that has 50 birds in it when the snow melts doesn't have at least one tom gobblin' around it's fringes come May. It has in the past? Must be better food source elsewhere this year. Could tell birds weren't around because there were very few tracks in the mud areas.
Have another friend with a big farm near Munnsville,NY that has givin' me permission. Gonna have to give it a shot! Dang! I shoud've scouted a little.
Anyone know if turkey populations near Munnsville,Ny are very good??

2nd time out went a little better! Went out here in Steuben,NY (North of Utica) on my wife's family farm. Was runnin a little late; arrived to the woods about 5:40am....Heard birds gobblin....Snuck into position about 200 yards away from where they were gobblin; called a few times & they never made a peep? Suddenly I see two Gobblers racing across the plowed cornfield toward me!! Once they got to about 35yards I made a nice clean shot on one...

Don't think this piece of land had been hunted all spring...& the Hen numbers may be down. When I was younger I called a few turkeys right out of the roost. They literally landed within shooting range of me...Or very close to it. Always on opening morning! Once the turkeys were educated a little it became a whole different ball game. Soft calling & very long pauses between calls often coxed one in. Sometimes after another hunter makes a shot little barely audible calls would work. It's like they try to regroup and be as quiet about it as possible.

Great bird, I have had way too many hens with the toms. The one I am after has a nice long beard hanging with him and 8 hens every morning . Both toms are nice , I will try tomorrow morning.

I've heard but never tried it...That when Tom's are always with hens to try a gobble call...Guess they will come to defend their breeding rights.
