Scary Moments After Wild Animal Attacks Sch'dy Woman
Feb 28, 2007 03:37 PM EST
Imagine taking out the garbage and running into a wild animal!
The wild creature, a fisher, has become a nightmare for one local woman, who found out Tuesday the one who attacked her has rabies. The attack was so vicious, she had to fight it off with a fire extinguisher!
NEWS10's Tracy Egan explains what happened.
Just back from getting rabies shots, Louise Scheuerman remembers every moment of her run-in with the rabid fisher.
"It was fierce," Louise says. "It jumped and landed on my feet, and put its mouth into my right in-step...it bit me both in-steps."
The fang marks on her leather shoes show why she had to use a fire extinguisher to get the fisher to let go.
About an hour before Louise was attacked, Mike Casey's dog, "Charlie" had a run in with the fisher in the backyard of his own home.
"When I called the dogs name, the fisher came right at me, and I grabbed the shovel and was able to scoot it away pretty much," Casey says.
Because the Casey's called 9-1-1, two Glenville detectives were in the area when the Scheuerman's called for help. The 12-pound fisher left a pretty good trail in the snow for detectives to follow.
Detective Bill Gallop tracked a full half-mile into the woods through deep snow before confronting it.
"He (Gallop) shot it once, and it went after him, and he had to shoot it a couple more times," says Glenville Police Chief Mike Ranalli.
This is the second time Louise was bitten by a wild animal, but she still feels lucky.
"You know, there's children around, I have granddaughters...I wouldn't want any of them attacked by anything like that," Louise says.
Louise has to continue receiving rabies shots, and does not expect to catch the deadly disease.
