Every year I buy the Gun of the Year from Furbearer's Unlimited. My first problem getting my gun from my Gun Shop was the fact that the Ruger
Mini 14 came with a thumbhole stock which is illegal here in NY. In order to take possession of the gun, my Gun Dealer had to remove the stock and dispose of it because possession of just the stock is illegal. A stock without the thumbhole was ordered from Ruger and I was able to get my gun two weeks later. The gun that just came was last year's semi-automatic 12ga shotgun, no problem right, NOT. NY had passed a law and it became effective on 04 September 2022 that all semi-automatic long guns could be possessed only if the new owner had a notation on his or her pistol permit authorizing permission to carry a semi-automatic long gun. Today I went to the County Sheriff's Office and now have my Pistol Permit annotated as a license to carry a pistol/semi-automatic long gun. My permit is also annotated concealed carry. I have the following points that should be considered.
1. What about a person who has no permit, and wants to buy a gun to go hunting? I guess they will have to be limited to bolt action, lever action, or break open type firearm.
2. The Deputy today told me that a conviction of a misdemeanor means the loss of your pistol permit and guns, does that mean you long guns also?
3. The deputy advised me to Co-own my guns with a family member who has a permit to prevent losing the guns. I would only lose them to a family member. I would not be able to possess the pistols and semi-automatic firearms as I would not no longer have a permit. He did say an arrest for a misdemeanor gives the judge the right to suspend the permit even if the charges are reduced to less than a misdemeanor, that is when a lawyer comes into play to get your permit back.
One more thing that happened this week, the March issue of Fur-Fish-Game magazine, page 5, article "Coalition Seeks Injunction." We need to be on our toes in NY about this seeing how our Governor wants to be "Just Like California".
