How many of you guys trap for fisher?
Last year we set out six traps for fisher and caught two of them. This year we bought more traps and will get more serious about it. We also set a few traps out for fox & coyote. We caught three red fox. We will be focusing more on that this year as well and do some water trapping forming, muskrat and beaver.

I’m going to try and set more for fisher this year, even though I’m in the southern zone and they aren’t prime yet during our 5 day season. Just cool animals to catch and I love seeing them in my traps.

What kind of sets are you useing? Last year we set a few leaning pole sets with 220 conibear traps and squirrel hides and guts for bait. This year we will make some wood cubbies and se what happens. We have deer meat scraps in the freezer for bait and i) get some squirrels again to use the guts & hides. I caught one fisher on a log crossovers on a creek last year.
I love seeing them in the conibear traps.

I'm still undecided on Fisher trapping this year. Only have one small property that I have to travel to for our unprimed 5 day season. I use the Noonan set for Fisher. I bait with beaver and use a trailing scent of homemade walleye oil. I will definitely be after fox this season and a few beaver and mink. Too bad fox and mink aren't paying much but I do it more for the love of trapping and being outdoors. The furs are sold locally and this helps me get a little above market average

I like taking any kind of predator out of the system. Fisher are hell on the small game population. Coyotes will kill an average of thirty deer fawns a year when they are feeding their pups.
They put trail cams on coyote dens at breeding season. One pair of Coyotes in Kansas killed 46 deer fawns to feed their pups. Even if you don't make much cash on your trap line keep at it and help the deer, turkey, grouse, rabbit, squirrel and other game animal population.

In my opinion, there are way too many deer!! Road kills and accidents caused by deer are on the rise. Shrubs/bushes around homes are getting trashed by deer. I am talking about the Fingerlakes region. Summer evenings, deer feed like cattle in the hay and soybean fields. I like to trap Coyotes and personally, like that they are feeding on the deer.

I’ll be using my fisher boxes with 160’s. Have some beaver meat for bait and read on another site that a guy had good luck with smoked chicken. I went to a wedding last week where they served that and was able to get some leftover chickens to try as bait. We shall see..

I fly back to Syracuse next Tuesday, and will be staying in Harpursville. We will be doing squirrel hunting early in the mornings then we will build cubby boxes and getting leaning poles all set up before the 25th opener. I will be picking up the two beavers from a Trapper out here in Washington State tomorrow and will swing them out and get them cut down for baiting our teaps. Last year I skinned all of the squirrels out and left the heads on the hips. Stick a 1x2 in the hide and wrapped it with tie wait and tied the semi stuffed squirrel above the conibear above the 220 conibears. We did catch two last year
We will be locating log crossovers on creeks to set up on as well.
Looking forward to the 25th opener. My non-resident New York trapping license was $275. It we decide to trap in Pennsylvania their non-resident trapping license is only $89.

I will be using the Noonan type hanging cages and running pole sets. 160's , skunk, and beaver. I like pre baiting. Will not set before mid November. Our season opens too early and the Fisher are not prime.
