An official NYSTA FaceBook page can accomplish many things that no message boards or anything else are capable of. Including... Private setting where ONLY members can view content. This board, trapperman, lynxlair, etc message boards are all open-read sources to the mass public. ANYTHING here can be screenshot and/or copy-paste elsewhere. Private messaging for individuals, group messages, online virtual meetings for instant communication. Instant uploads, instant communication. Paper print and a three-month lead time for inserts is beyond laughable these days. This is a 5G world now. Not to mention free, unlimited photos and images uploads, etc. Anyone with a smattering of FB skills can create and moderate a page. Heck, I can build one for NYSTA and while I'm at it, one for walleyed too unless he's already got a stealth FB account for lurking. Considering he's my northern-zone 2020 water season partner, it's the least I can do for him

You can't force people to trap. I got my kid into fishing , hunting and trapping. He took the online hunting course and this will be his first year..he can't wait till youth season begins.

Wow what alot to read. Learned more about the workings of NYSTA in this thread than I could have imagined. What a perfect storm to put fur prices and peoples perception of fur in the toilet. Oh well I'll be out there setting traps and walking the woods fields and streams anyway. Going to be learning a lot of tanning skills, what a better time to. Take care all

I have been very outspoken about the lack of communication from NYSTA, but the fact remains that all New York trappers need NYSTA to protect our right to trap. True we have our differences, but good honest discussion is healthy. I believe that $ 35 is pretty cheap to keep on trapping. If it weren't for the efforts of Dave Miller, Dave Liebig, and the JTI Committee it would be a different story. I do believe that the communication problem will be resolved. As for the future of trapping with all that is going on in the world, who knows? I must say that I disagree with Austin. I know that I'm old school, but I do feel that facebook is a very dangerous thing, not the modern thing of the future. I, personally refuse to get on there.Just my two cents. New York trappers need to join NYSTA. One excuse or another is no reason not to join.

Al, regardless all else, the end is clearly in sight for group meetings, people traveling long distances to a central location for live meetings, updates in a three-month old newspaper, etc.
IF there are to be any surviving trapper (and all other sportsman) organizations, they will migrate to electronic communication and virtual existence. Live message blasts, podcasts, private group messages, zoom meetings, etc. Maybe one annual convention where people meet in person, the draws include buying supplies, watching demos, meet & greet friends, etc. But other than that, every-day operations of any future organization will shift to purely online existence.

I have to admit I learned quite a bit about the NYSTA tonight while reading all the posts here. When I got into trapping only two years ago I went to the NY convention, joined NYSTA and gave my email. I think I received 2 issues of trapper post and received maybe one email. I haven't heard anything in a while and because of that I let my membership lapse. I was hoping to go to the convention this year and join NYSTA again, but I saw its been cancelled due to covid.
I understand that some people especially those of the older generation are not comfortable with new technology. The problem is if NYSTA is going to continue to be an organization it will have to keep up with the times. As was mentioned above, there is no reason why meetings can't be held over zoom as I'm sure most of us have used it for work or family when we were all under lockdown. Traveling 4+ hours for a meeting just isn't going to happen for most people in this day and age, not when there are other options like zoom. I certainly don't have all the answers but if the organization can't even send out an email with pertinent information about changes to the laws then there is an issue. I will probably join NYSTA next year as it is the only organization out there representing trappers when it seems the rest of the world is against us. But an email every now and then telling members whats being done, what they are lobbying for and against things like that would be very helpful to know and make me and other members feel more inclined to donate and help when needed.
I hope NYSTA can turn itself around and help the trapping community as we need all the help we can get. I hope everyone has a good season this year.

But if you joined NYSTA and received only 2 issues of the Trappers Post , that is not a NYSTA issue so to speak. It means that your membership was processed properly since you started to get the magazine. The other issues were either damaged in the mail, lost in the mail or some sort of internal issue at TP. I personally always pay my membership by check and do not recall any problems with the approx. 35 yrs that I have been in NYSTA not getting either T&PC or TP. Some may have been damaged but that is not NYSTA's fault.

Before I begin, I am not throwing stones at anyone.
I am the recording secretary. That position will be available at the end of this term. In fact, it can be filled sooner if someone wants to step up and take it over at the October meeting.
The current Trapper's Post needed the submissions before the BOD had a chance to meet. I usually condense the BOD meeting into something that can be given to the Trapper's Post. I was unable to attend the BOD meeting in July due to work, namely, I was(am) on the other side of the world. I can make 2 of the 4 meetings a year due to my work, I made specific coordination to be at home during the April BOD meeting. There was no April BOD meeting and the January meeting had to be postponed due to weather, again, I was out of the country during those times. Prior to taking this position I told the BOD that they should find another recording secretary, there have been no volunteers to fill that spot.
Here are the deadlines for the Trapper's Post. News and Calendar deadlines
Sep 15 - Nov/Dec issue Nov 15 - Jan/Feb issue Jan 15 - Mar/Apr issue Mar 15 - May/Jun issue May 15 - Jul/Aug issue Jul 15 - Sep/Oct issue
As you can see the November Trapper's Post submission is due in 12 days. I will have something for the Post.
The Website lost it's administrator a little over a year ago when the previous admin informed the board that he was done with it. I tried to keep it limping along with my limited skills and help from Mike. Last fall the website was experiencing issues and I called our web support. The support guy said that it was corrupted and needed to be reloaded with our backed up version. When it came back on line it had reverted to the very first backup, none of the officers were correct, nor any of the information that had been put on the website since 2012 was there. My internet was/is not of sufficient bandwidth to fix all of the things that needed to be fixed when I am at my job location. I fixed the Officers and their contact info and informed the IT chairman we needed a professional. Ray started looking and found us a webmaster that does this for a living. Ray and the Webmaster have been working on the Website since this Spring. We will never recover the data and posts that were put on the website between 2012 and 2019.
I receive 1-2 e-mails every week about membership issues. I forward those to Bob Samuelson to work on. If you are not receiving your Trapper's Post, please e-mail me @ natebrock11@yahoo.com or Bob direct at wildliferemovalservice@yahoo.com Include name and address and a phone number where Bob can reach you if he needs questions answered. I know in the past he has asked for the cancelled check or the receipt for your membership.
NYSTA cannot survive if we don't get some fresh help with county reps and officers. The BOD meeting is open to members. In the 5 years I have been going, I can count the number of members that have come on my fingers and have a couple left over. No organization can survive without active participation.
This association is not the only one struggling. I am the commander of my local VFW. I'm the youngest guy at 46, the next youngest is 22 years older than me. My oldest living member just turned 100. Take me out and the average age is 78-79. Even with me averaged in it is north of 70.
In closing, come volunteer as a county rep, we need some that will go back and pass info to the members of their county. The BOD needs your help. Help us help you.

Nate; Thank you for the response. Understood that publishing deadlines make it difficult to get info out to members in a timely manner. And the website has been down. But there is a FB site where info could have been posted. The convention may have been mentioned there, but little if anything else. There has been no information at all forthcoming from the BOD, JTI, etc. Besides Bill mentioning it in one of these posts, there has been no reaching out to ask for officers and reps. You can't wonder why there is a lack if nobody has asked.

Nate, I can one up you on this statement. I can tell you where everybody sits at the meetings since the one meeting we were hoping for a quorum.
