I have been rereading the Fisher Management Plan, as well as the DEC response to the public comments. Outstanding to me is the DEC steadfast sticking to the TPUE management theory, even though a number of comments proved the unreliability of the theory. What galls me is the response they gave in reply to requests for a later season. They acknowledge that October fisher are less valuable than later caught, but they argue the early pelts are still saleable.Brilliant! Furthur, I have heard them comment that trappers want a uniform opening date for all species. B.S. The only ones I hear advocating that are the DEC biologists, for their convenience. Back in the days of Gary Parsons and Mark Brown, Fisher were the king in the Adirondacks, and were managed properly. If the catch got too low they closed the season for a year or two to allow the population to rebound. After those two biologists left everything went down hill and little attention was paid to fisher. I was one of the trappers that had to tell them of the fisher decline, but they were more interested in studying pine marten, an increasing species. There are numerous theories for the decline, I have my own, but despite skull collections, log books, special permits, beaver meat donations, camera observations, and TPOE, the fact remains that DEC's Fisher Management has been a complete failure and they should be ashamed!
