I once heard a biologist suggest that all of the trapping seasons run at the same time. Would be a lot easier for DEC. I believe the October 25 date was to satisfy the coon hunters that want yet an earlier date. I'm not trying to start a war with them, just point out how I see things.
There does not seem to be any consideration on the part of DEC towards fur primeness. They seem to be focused on "opportunity" and "Trophies".
It seems came to me that furs are a renewable natural resource and should be managed not only to protect the species, but to be harvested when the product is at it's very best.Show me one species that is prime on October 25.
I remember when the state was divided along Rt.29 into the north - south zones. THen some genius in Albany came u finally woke up with the WMU's. Who came up with the October date for fisher in the southern tier? a real stroke of genius. They completely ignored that neighboring Pennsylvania has a limited season in December when the fur is prime.
In my area of the Adirondacks DEC eventually from screaming by guys like me that fisher populations were declining. So what did they do? Another genius shortened our season by 16 days, BUR ON THE WRONG END !.Demonstrates how much he knew. They refuse to listen to trapper input, stick out their chest, and claim we are the biologists, we know everything. In reality they are political hacks, kissing Cuomos A**, and protecting their jobs.As has been mentioned above, the Otter closure for so many years only demonstrates incompetence.
