TrapperJack,
Al is Al West. I live at Exit 19 of the Adirondack Northway. I was President of the NYS Trappers Assn. way back in 1988. I received notice that this Saturday's Director's meeting has been cancelled because of weather predictions. I don't know which way you would go to Herkimer, but you are welcome to ride with me. My E-Mail is: agwthird@hotmail.com.
As for my comments,I think that I have a right to voice my opinion. I don't always agree with NYSTA decisions, but I strongly support the organization. Most of the officers are dedicated members, but I strongly resent being lectured by one in particular who has no clue to the events that took place when I was President or Chairman of the JTI Committee for just under 25 years.

I just read through this thread again. Symptoms of a problem...."come to a meeting for an update"...and the poor guy who sent his money through paypal, never got anything, reached out to the webmaster, nothing. And then has to ask on a forum for another way to join, even after he paid once already. Good on him for persistence. It should never be that difficult to join.
Conversely, take a look at the PA trappers site. Up to date and easy to use website, very active facebook site, easy to join (I did even though I do not trap in PA, just respected what they have and do so much). 12 districts and every one has a report in T&PC each month, takes up 3 pages. You never have to wonder whats going on. When the latest anti trapping bill hit the NY assembly they reached out to their membership and asked them to write legislators in NY and plead with them to not support this bill. Two weeks later NYSTA finally spoke up on the bill and told members in NY on their facebook site to essentially stand down. But only on facebook, which many don't use. They have my email address, but I received nothing.
Yeah, I don't volunteer my time like some do (although I have), but I do support the NYSTA in many other ways. For those who volunteer...I commend you. But if you're going to volunteer to do something...then do something. Otherwise never hold it over my head.

Director's Meeting tomorrow, Feb.22 at Herkimer County Fairgrounds. Just a couple of remarks: I have harped about the lack of communication with the membership.More than an annual newsletter is needed.I know full well how expensive they are to mail out.Perhaps if we recovered the money that was stolen we could pay to do that. If that's not possible, at very least officers and directors need to put info in the Trapper's Post. How many do nothing???
Also, why is it that so many have left? Hmmmm Hmmm? Again, WHY?
What about an annual banquet, as a fund raiser like Pennsylvania and Vermont do? We need some inspiration please.
Does DEC come to all Director's Meetings?

I would like to attend, but have a conflict only because it would take me (according to google maps) 4.5 hours to get there. Thats a nine hour day on the road without pee breaks. Maybe there should be an eastern and then western directors meeting, and then once a year one in herkimer that brings all together. To come on here and hear that if I want to know what is going on then come to a directors meeting, is idiocy. At the meeting maybe address getting the website up and running so people can join vs having to hope they run into two old guys sitting in lawn chairs at a sportsman show behind a banner. Maybe address a business model that you can emulate ( like say PA trappers), and make that your goal(even if you don't reach it, you improve trying). Then put a business plan together to reach that goal. Address why, as Al says, people are leaving. What is the root cause of that, how can we correct that. Why are there so few county reps, and why are regional diectors or county reps not submitting monthly reports. Make that a requirement of holding position. If not meeting revenue goals what can be done to improve that? Who takes charge of that? If there is dissention within the ranks, an old boys club, those making it difficult for others to step up...get rid of them.
Tough time for trappers right now, to preserve the heritage and our rights there needs to be action.
I myself am willing to help in any way I can. But I am not willing to contribute my time behind a weak front, strong leadership is needed. I am not willing to be on a "covention committee", personally I think that seems to be the main emphasise of the org and it shouldn't be, it should be simply something we do while we fight the fight and promote trapping 365 days/year.

Where is the info coming from that we are losing members? As the membership chairman, I can honestly say that our numbers have gone up since I took over! Part of why we lost members was related to the antics of the previous membership person! He absconded with the funds which pissed people off which caused a great deal of badmouthing the organization. I have talked to several of the disgruntled and it’s tough to win back that trust!

So how many members are there Bob? How do they join?
If one person ran with the funds, which indicates one person was guilty, why has that caused the tremendous fallout of previous officers and/or other members? Why lack of trust?

If one person ran with the funds, which indicates one person was guilty, why has that caused the tremendous fallout of previous officers and/or other members? Why lack of trust? Maybe you should ask them. Maybe because you and other members of the board could be more transparent with what direction the association is going. Why are you so defensive all the time when someone asks a question? Why does one need to go to the directors meeting to be informed of the latest news from NYSTA? Are there secrets that are being kept from the rank and file? One has to wonder. And lastly, I had all intentions of going to the meeting. Someone was going to post here when they found out the date the meeting was rescheduled for. Oh, I see someone did at 5:27 Friday evening. As someone who has no access to internet at home, that did me no good. Maybe next time.

Can't be posting about any on-going litigation on social media. Any question can be asked and more than likely an answer will be given if known. Hopefully when the new website is up, meeting minutes will be posted. We have no secrets. Next meeting is 3rd Sat of April,I do not have a calendar in front of me. More than likely it will not be cancelled since snowstorms should be over.
Anymore questions just ask.

It went down and it is being worked on. Our member that is working on it was deployed over seas and the former person maintaining it resigned. We are an association with a handful doing all the work. How do you want to help by stepping up to the plate ? Just let an officer know your specialties or area of interest and I am sure we can find you a place.

Membership numbers are steady and slowly climbing. The November date when I sent in the renewals to TP there were around 20 new members. Many from the convention!
Currently there are right around 1400 members, including Lifetime members.
The current Lifetime list is being worked on, hoping to figure who is still wanting the magazine and/or who may be deceased.

The new website plan has been created and proposed. There will obviously be delays right now due to this China virus. The plan will have to go infornt if the board and the execs. Hope everyone is doing well. Mark

Anything new on this? Hardly know NYSTA exists these days. I get trappers post through my membership, otherwise I'd never know they're there.
