As a proud Dad, I just wanted to share some picts of Colton and his first deer! ...and from his smile, he was extremely thrilled!
Together, during archery season, we tried to harvest a deer with our self-bows …Colton had a potential shot at a doe, maybe 12 yards away, but he was not comfortable making the shot as there were a few branches in the way and he didn’t want to take a chance wounding the deer. After many hours/days/weeks hunting, this past weekend Colton was successful in harvesting a deer! We were hunting together behind our house in a ground blind we made when he spotted three deer in the distance heading our way. Once the deer approached, Colton made a perfect shot, hitting the heart of largest deer at about 30 yard. As you can imagine, with all the time and effort we put in the woods, all the ups and downs, Colton's positive and upbeat attitude each walk back to the house despite not seeing any deer, I was on cloud-9 and extremely proud of him!
We only have one slug gun, so I would sit quietly next to him as an extra set of eyes and provide coaching (probably too much but I’m his Dad). Hopefully before next year, I will be able to find him a deer gun of his own so I can hunt too! …just kidding, I would give up hunting completely just to be in the woods with him!!
And to top all this off, he insisted on skinning and butchering the deer himself! He has helped me in the past so he didn’t need much more than a few pointers and some muscle power to pull the hide off the deer a bit. With the shot placement he made, the hide will be perfect for us to tan! My Dad (his Grandpa) and a good friend (Brian) stopped by during the deer processing and were rewarded with a tenderloin lunch!
