I am pleased to inform New York's trappers that the JTI Committee met with DEC's Furbearer team in Ithaca yesterday regarding the highly contested Fisher Management Plan. I am pleased to say the meeting was of a cordial nature. I am also pleased to report that DEC has said to us that they indeed heard our comments and as a result of that there would be some changes to the plan. DEC went to great lengths to explain their reasoning behind the plan and at times their was some lively discussion. I am pleased to report that there will be some changes to the fisher plan which I regard as positive. At this point in time it would be inappropriate to specify those changes. Did we get all of the things we wanted? The answer is no, however the plan is far better now than the original one. Again, Thank you to all of the trappers that took the time to comment, and to the trappers that did not; Shame on you!
Al

Thanks for the update. That sounds like good news. Why is it inappropriate to share the results?

There is a great deal involved before the revisions are finalized. We certainly will advise trappers when that happens. Did not mean to create suspense; just wanted to inform trappers that there has been positive movement, but there also remains portions with which NYSTA and JTI do not agree. There is give and take in all negotiations and the stalemate that we were at has been broken.

Thanks for the update Al. I hope all trappers see the value in standing together and voicing our concerns in a positive and civil manner. We must stand behind our JTI committee and be ready to respond positively when needed. The NYSTA convention will be a great place to join the state association for those who aren't members yet. A big "Thanks" goes to all our JTI members.

I am very proud of my fellow JTI members. Five members were able to attend. All drove considerable distances and some lost a day or half day of work, all at their own expense. Every member attending participated. I would caution trappers that there are still parts of the plan with which we do not agree, however I credit DEC with movement on some points and the plan is better than the original draft. One of the biggest mouths in this issue was mine. I am pleased to say that our relationship with the DEC Furbearer team has been restored. We have enjoyed a 27 year relationship with the JTI Committee and DEC and that needs to continue. There are other management plans on the horizon; Pine Marten and Otter, and that will not be easy. I did come away from the meeting with a much greater respect for the DEC team. There was a presentation by a Cornell PHD that was so technical that most of it went over my head. There also was a detailed presentation and explanation of his work by our own north country biologist, Dr.Paul Jensen. While I do not agree with all of his theories, he is the biologist, and a brilliant one. I'm just an old mountain trapper, but I have the greatest respect for Paul. The things I've learned in all of this is that if you can't say something to a man's face, then don't say it at all and the other is that driving through Ithaca is a nightmare worse than Boston!

Thanks for the update and the effort of all that participated. Working together is the best thing for both pRties involved. Yes Ithaca is a nightmare to drive around in and is just as liberal as Boston... I work over there and trust me it is one weird town lol

The things I've learned in all of this is that if you can't say something to a man's face, then don't say it at all... my one and major dislike of message boards conversation is that. For me personally, anything and I do mean everything I have ever posted online in any message board is exactly what I'd say to the same people in person verbatim, word for word. I also believe some men get more vocal in message board forums than they would in person because the conversation in-person goes much more civil and two-way respect. By the same token it appeared for awhile that there was a total block of communication between trappers represented and the decision makers inside DEC. Sometimes one side or the other has to take a firm, hardline stance at the proverbial table to restore equality. Something the best negotiators know/do inherently, if only our POTUS wasn't totally clueless about that but let's not wander down that rabbit trail here. In any event, it appears the negotiation process is flowing again and that's a very good harbinger for everyone's collective future on all sides
