I use Berkshire hd the first year they were nice year two I am not happy with them the tip bends why driving them in so I am thinking the wolf fangs but would like some feed back from some of you all to see who likes what I used cable last year but I think I am going to use chain and cable well let's see what one takes the cake

I switched from HD Berks to Wolf Fangs for the same reason you're switching. I made some fangs with 3/32 cable and they worked fine except now and then I can't get the cable all the way into the ground. This leaves the cable sticking out of the ground and I have trouble making it lay down.
I also made some with #2 Machine chain attached to the fang with a loop of 3/32 cable, think I got this tip from Coop. It works well for me and is easy to make.
The W.F. are very nice to drive in the pilot hole using a driver made for them. I bought a driver for 15 bucks or so and would recommend paying extra and getting a good quality driver, mine bent half way through the season, still works but kind of a pain. I hear Nightstalker makes a very nice heavy duty driver.

Hi Red, best thing I ever did was switch all my predator traps to chained super stakes with welded s hooks. no more tangled up Cale stakes.

The super stakes are nice but the driver head get stuck in some times pain in the butt I got a box of #2 chain and a few 100ft of cable but I just dont know what ends I should use to many options I am going to order 100 ends to start off with so trying to find what one is best

I tried shortening my cable by 6" and added 6" of chain to avoid the possibility of the cable sticking up in the trap bed, I finally just went with Super Stakes...

Super stakes are almost unbreakable.. Find an unbreakable driver and your all set..

I like the Berkshires my self. I predrive a hole and the anchor drives in nice. Nice and lite , easy to make, price is ok, reuseable.

I'm with bmtrapper on this. For the price Berkshire HD are the way to go. There are a couple tricks, pre dive the hole and use your body weight to drive the stake as far as it will go, after that, make sure the cable is tight and straight in line with the driver otherwise the driver may jump out of the socket tip when you're hammering it in. I only use cable because I think it sinks easier, and if you ever have to cut it off it's not such a big loss.

Ya i liked them but i am having a toss up with the sting rays and the bullets I dont like the pogos or the duck bills as for the Berkshire my first year I used a pice of rebar and a log nut driven on to it worked grate so last year I got one from the c onvenson and it would bend the tip all the way down I did as said from you all pre drove it in by hand /hammer then drive the end in with my weigh a good ways then I hold the wire tight by the lug nut hit it and the driver would go all the way pull it out and tug on it pop the end was only in 5in gave up on it and got the old home made Jobber but its not tuff as I need some times so I am going to change so I may sell all I have now to make up for the new ones I get

I welded a T handle on top of my driver (mine is rebar as well). That way I can get both hands and all my weight right on it. In some cases I can drive it right in to the swivel without hammering. Keep the driver as short as possible to avoid it jumping around when you do have to hammer it. Mine is about 3 or 4 inches longer than my cable stake.

For those of you that use superstakes and drive and pull them repeatedly in hard ground, watch the eye of the stake that your S-hook or lock washer attaches to. Driving and pulling will stress the eye and turn the hole from round to oblong. When you see an oblong eye beware because it won't be long before it fails... Just a little FYI..

The 1st cable stake i used was heavy duty berkshires. Something like only 2/3 when i pulled i could reuse the next season.. Don't think any made it past 3 seasons and I'd get out and try putting in my trapline and have them bust off as i was trying to get my line it. Frustrating... That was when i only ran 12 or so k9 traps...
Think I'm on season #6 since i completely switched over to super stakes.. With over 200 k9 traps rigged up with them.. Mine go from stake to 1/8 cable around a foot long then 6 or so inches of chain. Then a swivel and to my trap chain..

I'm sort of Brian's non-official translator, should you ever want or need a translation. But somehow I think you've got Redneckese figured out just fine. Brian, I agree with all that's been said of super stakes. The "regular-grade" drivers - nah. Nope, the first one I had lasted me 6 sets and 3 of them stuck on the driver and came out with the driver when I pulled it up. Then I got another, far better quality driver at Herkimer last year, it's fine so far but nightstalker will make the best - and last - you'll ever need. If funds are the issue, what I used to do way back when (and still do because it works) is to fasten the trap to a "clog," which is nothing more than a drag made of whatever is in the area and strong enough to withstand anything a coyote can throw at it. GREEN wood, especially buckthorn or other invasive types that I'm going to cut down anyhow, work best for me. Just be sure that there are things - branches, etc. - to keep the chain or cable or whatever from slipping off. A fence staple is almost a requirement, but I've done without one. The buckthorn or whatever should be at least 3" at the stump end. I generally leave the tree whole, unless it's a really tall one but make it fit the set and surroundings. The beauty of this is not just "cheap" but it's natural; in a blind/trail set, especially in the woods or pasture, it's just a tree that went down. I lay it across the trail and set the trap in the trail to one side or the other (I've since mostly gone to one trap each side of the clog, in the trail, both attached to the same clog) and the clog is a natural step-over and the foot comes down squarely in the pan. Of course deer are a problem with springing the traps, but deer are that problem wherever deer are. If using at a dirt hole or other set, I lay the butt-end of the clog nearest the trap and run it out at an angle to more or less act as a guide. Too much is not good, of course, but... you know what I mean. Anyways, that's about that on that. Only one time did I have a loss using this, and it was a Bigfoot that got caught and destroyed the little square-jaw Victor No. 2, and those traps really are #2 when it comes to bigfeets. Or great big ol' coyotes, or whatever treated the trap like it was a paperclip. (Just kidding, it was a huge coyote and it took that clog a long long way through thick woods and brush. They generally don't go far, this one did.) Adios!
