I was recently given permission to trap coyotes on a farm loaded with them. I see them in the hayfields mouseing in the mornings and evenings all the time. Problem is the landowner says go ahead and trap but only with soft catch traps. I have never used them and have no clue on their ability to hold an eastern coyote. Anybody have any experience with these? Which ones are legal jaw spread in NY? You'd think after 40yrs of trapping that I would have at least tried one, but no landowner has ever asked me to before. Thanks Guys!

I'd NOT go with a Victor Softcatches, personally......there are FAR better coyote traps available now with rubber jaws, either from the factory or aftermarket.
Most people won't buy Jakes or they are not available. I'd get a four-coiled #3 Bridger from Caven and be done with it......though the MB650's also come with rubbers as an option......
the #3 shows a 5.5 inch INSIDE jaw spread, so they are NYS legal......
Unless the laws/regulations have changed!

I wouldn't use them at all. I'd tell the farmer politely thanks, but no thanks. If we start conforming to people who don't know anything then we'll soon be run by people who don't know anything. Let the coyotes over run his farm and see how much he likes soft catch traps in 2 years.

I use KB compound 5.5 with rubber jaws. Use them where domestic dogs are a (pain in the a$$) problem. The dogs usually sitting there waging his tail. They will hold anything.

I use duke and victor #3 rubber jaw with no problems, I modify all my traps so they dont come apart but you will need to replace the pads some times. I use them by my choice and have never been asked to do so. The first soft catch I got my hands on in 1980 or so was a victor 1.5 stock and the trap NEVER held ANY land animal. The springs were weaker than a trap that burnt in a fire. 4 coil or good music wire springs and those pads will work.

I decided to go with the bridger #3 rubber jaws 4X4 coils. With just a few mods, I have them trapline ready. If I decided I really don't like them, I can remove the rubber, and inside laminate them, and they are NY legal still. I think they'll work out just fine though.
