I can only think of a few lure makers that you get the impression they love the craft and Blackie was one of them. We shared a lot of conversations about the ups and downs of the business and the direction it can go sometimes. The marketing is a necessary evil but I connected with his passion for just the nuts and bolts of creating and formulating products. He took to our family and our style of business and made us feel welcome in the beginning when most just look the other way. I will always appreciate that, and he will be missed by the Night Owl family.

I took a trapping class he gave with the help of a few others. It was given at a holiday inn sometime in the late seventies, seams like just yesterday. He will be missed by all in the trapping comunitity.

Blackie was one of the first of my trapping heros as a young man. Read all he wrote and started using the blend shortly after it was on the market. Caught a lot of fur using it. One of the nicest men you would ever want to meet and always looked forward seeing every year at the NYSTA convention. He and Joanne stopped running the convention circuit a few years ago now and haven't seen him since but missed his presence there. Blackie may you rest forever in eternal paradise with the Lord.

Had many enjoyable conversations with Blackie & Joann over the years. He told me he had a little trouble understanding my accent which we all know I don't have one . I used to buy a lure of his and I would get four one ounce bottles. Told me a four ounce bottle was cheaper. Told him if I drop four ounce bottle in pond I have none but If I drop one ounce bottle I still got some. He liked my answer and sold me the four one ounce bottles for the reduced rate.
Yes I will miss him... May he rest in Peace.
Bit of Carroll Black advice. If there is no grass clump where you want one , go get one and put it where you want it.

I too am saddened at the loss of "Blackie". I was talking to Joe Goodman today and he said funeral services are this weekend. I have a few memories to share: I forget the exact year but NYSTA had the convention in Cobleskill, NY. I was attending my first convention and my Dad and I were staying at a local bed & breakfast. The woman had told us that Carrol Black had slept in the room the night before. Well that night I hopped into that bed and it hit the floor collapsed. The woman's husband was an over the road trucker and was off somewhere in the midwest so she pointed Dad and I in the direction of the husbands tool box and we got to work. Dad and I still laugh when we say you know that Blackie broke that bed. Of course I would always make my way to Blackie's booth or attend his demo at our state convention. I have also used Blackie's Blend lures for my entire trapping career and I was pleased to hear that Scott Welch will be continuing the line of lures. Night Bandit, Fatal Attraction, Fur King and Boar's Delight are and always have been top notch raccoon attractors. TKO and Brushmaster never disappoint in Canine and even bobcat(TKO)attraction for me. Glad to know the lure formula's live on with him.

I spent hours talking to Blackie at various conventions years ago, just like everyone else. He was one of those guys who loved to talk day & night, and you would never ever tire of listening to him.
We talked about everything under the sun but our "favorite" topic was powerlifting. Not everyone knew that he was a rather serious powerlifter back in his day and we both spoke that language, so he'd grab me out of the crowd every time I walked by and the first question he'd ask is how my lifts are going. It was sort of our thing to discuss what maybe not a lot of others did with him.
Terrific, fantastic, wonderful, awesome guy. One of my all-time favorite characters that I've ever met in life, and that is saying a lot. When I heard the news of his time being short posted on FB a few days ago, my eyes instantly welled up with tears. Some of which spilled down my face, too.
Time is marching on for all of us, I guess.
