Thanks stewa107 for sharing . I hear the only place to trap them is in the high peaks of the Adirondack. Some day my son and I would like to trap some? Thanks again.

Pine Marten are found in the Adirondack high peaks, however they have expanded their range within the Adirondacks.

Recently I've heard of unconfirmed reports of sightings and tracks on the core of the Tug Hill Plateau.
They are also in the south central ADK's near Atwell, NY / North &South Lake areas.

A marten was killed within the city limits of Rome last fall/winter and also one trapped incidentally and turned in just slightly north of Oneida Lake. I believe I was also told that this was a season of another record marten harvest. Marten harvests show wild swings in numbers due to mast crop and resulting small mammal populations. The take can be 300-400 animals one season and 25 or less the next. Similar to fisher, marten seem to be increasing their range as their overall population increases. That happens out of necessity based on habitat requirements.

It stands to reason with back to back massive acorn crops the last 2 years, the migration and population increases of marten following squirrel populations was inevitable. Maybe the DEC should start introduction programs for Marten in other areas of the state. Then again that might be like asking a burglar to house sit while you go on vacation...
