I live in southern NY, In my area its mainly hardwoods almost no fields. Ive had coyote sets out for the last two weeks at one of my properties i just got permission to. The caretaker hunts it so i wasn't able to get in earlier during the year. Over the past two weeks i have had coyotes come up with 5 feet of the traps and back off. All my traps are clean and waxed. I can't figure out why they are so wary of the sets. I make sure all the traps are bedding and blended into the surrounded areas I've even tried backing the trap away from the set back almost 3 feet just incase they decide to stop. Im using Beaver meat as bait as well as some Caven predator plus and fox hollow lure. I use different baits on the sets to see what works better. no luck so far . Anyone have any advice or tricks I should try ?

What kind of set? Dirt hole im assuming ? Try making a flat set 15 feet from the original and on the line they approach from. Then go 20-30 yds the way they leave and drop a scent post set. Im a proponent of gang setting an area. If its good enough for one trap, its perfect for 3.

How much lure are you using....Sometimes less = more

I like it when I see they've taken a look. Especially a baited set. They'll come back. Maybe a shot of urine, but I'd leave it.

Today they walked past 5 of my sets. Added some urine to them and put 2 blind sets on the trails they use. Hopefully with this incoming snow they will be moving hard tonight.

There is nothing more frustrating than that first inch of snow. There will always be K-9 tracks right near, or walking past, your set. I suspect all trappers miss more than they catch---- if they actually knew.

What you are describing is the nature of coyotes unfortunately. People in the west tried to eliminate coyotes for a long time and They never could. you can't catch them all, I remember when I first got into K9 trapping and asking a good friend of mine who is also a great trapper the reason why I was having pattern misses at my dirt holes. He explained the importance of just a subtle guide or two and I said perfect! Problem solved! He laughed and said nothing is ever solved when it comes to coyotes. As soon as you think you have it figured out, there will be one that leaves you scratching your head and staring down at your set. Just Keep your sets working and good things will happen. You never know the next time you check you might just have a double!

I've been having the same kind of problem.. I have a dirthole set for them and they also follow the trail down and cut away from where my set is like they know the trap is there.. I have had fox come to the set a poop by it but the coyotes are just ignoring it completly
