I noticed that one brand of my 160's measure 5 5/8", almost making them legal to set on land in any manner with or without bait. My question is, has anyone on here ever tried modifying them so they could be used without DEC's special regulations.

You cannot modify a bodygripping trap by adding lamination's to make them legal like you can on a foothold

Just my opinion but if you catch a small coon in a coniber ya can't let it go. Catch that small coon in a DP or a coil spring you can catch him when he's bigger and worth more next year. Just sayin.

While even if you could somehow modify the trap, it would be unethical and trying to circumnavigate the law is just asking for trouble.... www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9207.html

I see nothing unethical about making a trap that isn't legal, legal. If you can get them at or below legal size then I see no reason that they couldn't be used.
Back in the day, several years ago, I was a big fan of 220 body grips for coon trapping and was very upset when the state changed the law making them illegal without the opening restrictions. I built boxes and cut buckets and tried to make the body grips work, legally. I ended up using more and more coil spring and less and less body grips. I really like the ability to release the critters that don't quite make the upper grades and the non target critters as well. I also found out that a good number of fox, both red and grey can, and do, get caught in a 1 1/2 coil set with the intent to catch a coon. Turns out that I catch more fur altogether using them. I finally gave up on trying to catch coon in body grips all together.
If I were you, I would put my effort into footholds instead of into making the body grips legal. Set the body grips in the water for the rats.
Just my $.02.

The law states that any trap measuring less than 5 1/2" can be used in any manner but no manufacture makes a trap just under 5 1/2". My 155's measure 4 3/4" and I don't like them that small for my fisher boxes. I am trying to obey the law, not trying to do anything unethical, not sure where that's coming from. I know the NYS trapping regs. well, I was just asking if anyone had altered the traps to use them on the ground being though they were so close to being legal.

Duke, Bridger and Northwoods all make a 150 size trap that measure 5"x 5".
Have you sacrificed one of your old 160's and tried to reshape it? The worst thing that could happen is you ruin it.
