I hope it is acceptable to post this type of communication on this forum. I typically find contributors to these forums to be the most helpful. So, we picked up the "Grizzly Bear" No 6 trap, shown below, at a local estate sale. This trap is very large, about 42"-43" in length, and weighs a bit over 40 lbs. I understand it is absolutely illegal to use these bear traps, but have to believe there are collectors for these. I had one person tell me this was a currently manufactured trap, but the gentlemen we bought it from is in his 70's and assured us it was the real thing and came down from Canada. I know nothing of traps and am hoping this is the real thing and not a reproduction. I have seen similar marked traps sell at online auctions for $900. Just looking for any input/opinions from those involved in trapping. Interested in knowing the best place to advertise for sale, and opinions on the authenticity of a trap like this. I have tried listing on ebay, was only up for a day with lots of watchers, then ebay took down the listing as a prohibited item. Thanks for any input you can provide. karen

Thank you. Yes, I was able to find the one you pointed out, but the markings were totally different. And, I can't find any additional markings on the trap I have. I found pictures of a very similar one, with the same markings, at this location: cameratrapcodger.blogspot.com/2011/07/number-6-grizz-catcher.html It was posted several years back, but perhaps I will try to contact the author of that article. Thanks so much for your input! Very much appreciated.

Your trap was produced and sold by Cabela's from 1994 through 2007. For liability reasons, late models of this trap were purposely fitted with weak springs and a notice tag stating the trap was for display purposes only. As to value, in excellent condition, $350. to $400.
