I engrave my name on the base plates of all the new traps, just in case.
Make sure you report the loss to the DEC. We had on fellow around here a few years back, stealing traps and then setting the stolen steel on property he had been told to stay off of several times. When the property owner found a red fox bouncing with a bracelet on, he called in the DEC. They went looking for the guy who had his tag on the traps stolen. He, of course, denied having set any of the traps on the posted property. The DEC was on the ball though, and set up some camera traps and caught the culprit red handed.

It's pretty sad that these things happen, I have only lost 1 northwoods #1 coilspring so far this year, so if you see it give me a shout All kidding aside, I can't imagine losing 30 new traps at all, never mind in one day. That would take me out of the game for sure.

I completely agree these people are horrible. I hate any kind of thief. Thankfully have not yet lost any of mine. Do you guys mainly lose them on public land?

I read your post last night and did not have time to reply ! Thieves are the worst last yr I lost some equipment. Again this morning I came up missing a cage trap. To make matters worse before I realized it was gone there was a car driving back and forth real slow, at first I thought it was a cop or someone being nosey but as I made it to the rd on there last trip by the sped by super fast and it is my belief now that it was my thief trying to locate more traps ! I pulled what I could but I had to be here at work by 5 ! I called the Eco well actually both of them for the area right away !

I called the eco 2x a few years ago and left messages but never got a return call. I decided to contact the forest ranger since I saw him riding by opening morning but no call back as of last night.

Huh that's crappy the Eco's that I called I know well, they are good about calling me back ! Last yr a ranger and an Eco worked together and actually caught a thief with my trap in his truck. If they dontbcatch him I will but I won't turn him in to them I will turn him into bait ! Lol

A well armed man stepping out from behind a big ole tree will certainly put the fear of god into the thief, and make you feel a little better, if nothing else.

Well I found out who my thief was, and really it wasn't stolen! Just taken a johnny do good took it and called Dec and said he found an untagged trap < ( not the case he was just blind ) the Dec officer found the tag and read him the riot act about disturbing traps! He told him even if it looks illegal do not touch it call us and we will sort it out ! I did not press charges I was just glad to have it back! And the gentleman sincerely appologized, as well asked if h and his grandson could tag along one day ! If the Dec officers are not doing anything call your local office write a formal complaint ! Its their job !

You should have pressed charges. Ignorance for the law and other people's property is no excuse.

...as well asked if h and his grandson could tag along one day ! lol!!! So they can see where the rest of your traps are set, or so they can find one that really IS untagged and get you busted?! Just kidding... I had some neighbors trespassing during hunting season, they had a reasonable excuse (for once someone did!) and were honest about things, and asked me the same thing they asked you. I said "sure," but "someday" and "one of these days" aren't actually on the calendar, so.... not yet.

And I'm glad it turned out this way for you, 'cuz otherwise it just eats you right up inside, y'know? And I'm glad you found out right away. The longer it goes the more it takes from you.
