guess the question or theories you hear tossed around could go both ways in a persons mind talking strictly straight mink musk...to me at least...
that being said walking up on fresh mink musk from a catch, sure is different to bottled musk or collected glands at least to me... then the question of what else is added to the mix your using... does it imply or cause the same reaction one way or another or add a curiosity factor... know personally, i like to snap mink dry at andd on the set that caught them if their wet and have caught others in the same set within a reasonably short period.... wasn't one old secret indian method, that use to be sold... tapping the ass of a fresh caught mink above or at your set... sorry not much help ed.... jim

Dear Friend, I am of the opinion, from my observations, that mink musk, at best is only a fair attractor if one is using it exclusively to make a big catch of mink. AS MANY MINK WILL PASS BY A SET AS THAT WILL STOP TO INVESTIGATE A STRAIGHT MINK GLAND LURE. I agree with Mr. Severing that collected glands have a different smell than musk emmitted from a caught mink!
I have spent many years trying to perfect a mink lure that will cause a high percentage of mink to investigate a set with only fair results for my efforts. I have found that clean, fresh mink urine is very attractive as are weasel glands but both are hard to obtain in quantity. The best concoction for mink Ive built and use is a mixture of mashed muskrat & mink livers aged with cod liver oil and some chopped weasel glands. Regards

Papabear, do you age that mixture with a preservative or do you let it taint as it ages? How long do you age it? Do you find it more effective than the commercially available lures? Thanks for sharing!
I have used chicken livers before and had limited success. I have found that the fresher they are, the better they seem to work.
I often find frog remains in amongst mink sign where ever I find it, and have often wondered if frogs could somehow be made into a working mink bait. Any ideas?

I think that mink are lured visually, if you have the perfect pocket set along a well traveled mink area no matter what you put in that set the mink well investigate....but more so if there is a visual attractant there. Stick a crappie had back in that hole he'll go in. You now have 2 visuals, the hole tweaking their investigative nature and then the fish head, they see something and the fish odor helps somewhat I'm sure. Now if you added mink musk to that set I don't think it would matter one bit. It may attract or may not, as far as being a deterrent I don't think so as I am of the belief that mink have no fear when hungry and on the hunt.
