I've been doing a lot of reading as to how to accomplish this and today I had some free time so I went ahead with it. I have victor coil spring traps and they are sloppy with side to side movement on the pan, the pan tension is really not adjustable for all intents and purpose, though they do have the adjusting screw, and the pan travel is way long and grabby in it's tension.
So to address these things I first dissembled and filed the dog faces flat and square, then squeezed the dog loop so there was no front to back play. I then took my dremel tool and put a little step or notch into the pan where the dog gets set, I believe it is called a "night latch" again I squared all surfaces of the pans matting surfaces with a good file.
The brass screws that come with the victors are really not too bad as far as size but I think where there is a problem is where the pan mates to it's mount bracket, when it is tightened up to the tension it is not square but rather slated into the pan, the bracket arms that is, to alleviate this I got some #8s brass washers from lowes and put them between the pan and its mounting bracket. This I think is the one most improved step I took, the tension is now easier to adjust and it is a solid feel on the pan with no slop side to side, also the pan no longer has varying tensions while in the up and down range in motion.
I also do like the notch for a consistent set each time, yes of course you can accomplish the same thing by just lowering the pan to level with no step but this just takes the guess work out of it for me.
All in all for a newb like me these are easy mods to do and it helps me get more acquainted with the functionality of these traps, I am glad to be tinkering with them and getting ready for season, I'll be starting late as I do not think I'll be ready at season open.
