what is better for prepping traps? full metal jacket or dye and wax? and why? i'm new to trapping and i dyed and waxed my traps, but i dont think they are right when they dried everything sticks and they still seem to be getting rusty. FMJ seem alot easy and cleaner then dye and wax looking for so info.

Bulldog,
I don't speed dip or dye my footholds, just wax them. First I clean them well, let dry completely. I use a large crock pot to wax them. Turn on pot and let wax melt completely. Next I hold the trap by the end of the chain and submerge the trap, the trap turns kinda white from the trap being cooler than the wax, let it stay submerged until the trap has no white on it. Pull the trap out, it should look like it is wet with water, this means there is a very thin coat of melted wax on it, I jiggle the trap over the pot to remove excess wax then give it a quick spin, "I do this outside of course". Now I hang the trap up to dry and do the next one.

You got to get the wax hot enough. It's hot enough when it just starts to smoke a bit. I have a large stainless pot I have committed to waxing, use it every year just add a 1-2 cakes of wax each year to top it off. I can put 3-4 traps at a time in, leave in for 2-3 minutes, you want the trap to be at the same temperature as the wax before you remove. Keep the wax hot as you continue. Be careful, it's flammable.

well, just wanted you guys to know i rewaxed my traps today. the wax was smoking and when i put a trap in it began to boil. the trap didn't turn as white as someone said but there were alot of bubbles and it did turn color. let the traps lay in the wax for about a half a monute to a minute. hoping they are right this time.
