How does one go about obtaining a pistol permit. I know there is a long wait and everything, but I'm wondering where to start? Do you need to take a course, does it depend what county? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Contact your county clerk. They should have someone who handles pistol permits. Fill out the app. get finger printed go through background and reference checks. Some counties require you to take basic safety to get your permit and its not a full carry until you take the advanced safety course.

My advice would be to get your four references lined up and talk to them and make sure they are on board! Then start the paperwork. The references can not be related in anyway, even by marriage. So if someone married your wife's cousin and has a different last name it doesn't matter, can't use them. Also, you can't use a references relative also, so none of their husbands, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc etc. I just moved to where I live now and everyone I know is related by marriage somehow so basically I am dead in the water for now. I tried explaining my situation and was told " well go find some friends and know them for a year".. so pleasant!

As rivervalleytrapr said, County Clerk. I would go to the County Clerk, they will give you all necessary paperwork and answer any question you may have.

In our county (ulster) they are done through the Sheriffs dept. Also here it doesn't seem to matter if your related. I was a reference for my brother-in-law. The application asked if you were related to the applicant. It didn't specify that you couldn't be related. He had his permit in about 3 months.Im sure each countys rules are different.

Wow, in New Hampshire I go to the chief of police fill out the application, and if your not a fellon or mentally impaired they have 10 days to issue the permit. The 10 days is for a complete background check.

In Oneida County there is actually a Pistol Permit Office and you need to take the NRA safety class before you can pick up an application.

It all depends on your home county. I am one of the instructors for Ulster County to get a pistol permit. They require a basic safety class just to get the permit. Some counties require a class, others don't. Contact your County Clerk or Sheriff's Department for the information.

Its strange how slow/fast they seem to get processed. A co worker waited over a year to get his. My brother-in-laws only took a few months.Same county in each case.

Back in 1983, two of my brothers - one older, one younger than me - and I applied for our pistol permits on the same day. I had just gotten married and my wife and I were living "suburban," lol, the older brother was living in the city, and the younger brother still lived on the farm. Oh, all the experts we had then! "City-dwellers can take YEARS, yours will take 9 or 10 months, but the farm boy will get his in a matter of weeks." Well, the "city-dweller" got his in what was then a record time of TWENTY-TWO DAYS, I got mine in 5 weeks, and "the farm boy" took almost a year. So, I don't know if there's any hard and fast rules to their game. Unfortunately, it may well be imbued with politics anyhow.
