If you cannot beat um, join um! Even though the recent weather has not made trapping to “easy” as the southern zone season comes to an end, we have still been able to squeeze as much out of the cold snowy weather as possible. Wanted to share a couple picts from this past weekend; Archery club annual snow shoe shoot. There were three categories; compounds with modern shoes, traditional bows with modern or wooden shoes, and primitive bows with wooden shoes. With snow shoes, bow and six arrows, race through the woods and shoot at the 3-D targets set up along the ½ mile course. And our ice skating rink…40x100. I think that my brother (also neighbor) and I enjoy “working” on the ice as much as we do skating on the ice! The kids love it! l Hope everyone is enjoying the weather ... before we know it, Spring will be in the air!

Thanks AJ...if we can set up a time for you to stop by in the near future, maybe you could bring your son so he can skate around...we have extra skates in various sizes. I'm taking off next week to coincide with the kids and Amy's winter break...let me know.

Thanks Catman! NEver imagined how much use we were able to get out of our shoe shoes and skates this year! Someone reminded me that two years ago on March 1, we had already mowed the lawn twice!

lol, I remember that year... we had a stretch of 21 days without the temps dropping below freezing at night, and the maple sap kept flowing. There were a lot of "old timer's," both young and old, panicking because the old hard and fast rule about sap not flowing unless freeze-thaw cycles were going on was being unraveled before their eyes. If I recall correctly, it was March 4, 1970(?) when we had a blizzard here. The worst storm I've ever seen, even worse than the Blizzard of '66. In the city and towns, it was still bad but nothing like we got it in the boonies. Nine days before the road was opened. But that's another story... Dino, do you make your own snowshoes? Rawhide for the lacing? Next on your list, lol?

Hi TMC-
Missed your post above earlier.
I have not made my own snowshoes...yet... I have white ash and rawhide from my deer last year ready to go...still researching which route I should go. With Spring alomst here (although since you posted above we had our second blizzard of the year!), I'm switching gears to making some center seam moccasins. I made a prototype last night out of felt...trying to find some inexpense elk leather to use for the real deal. I'm following a design I read about in one of my Mark Baker longhunter books and VHS tape.
