I bought a few MB 550 traps recently and I also got the extra springs to 4 coil them. What is the easiest way to put the extra springs on? I was going to 4 coil a few, and leave the others with just 2 for fox traps because MB I guess does not recommend all 4 coils for fox?

They don't recommend 4 coiled 550's for grey but I have caught them and the were not hurt at all but I think greys hurt themselves by rolling more than the trap hurts them IMO. Jim

I think the reason they don't reccomend 4 coils for greys is the fact that the pan tension on a 4coiled 550 is significantly higher than the 2coiled. Greys are a fairly small, light footed critter and they may not trigger the trap. Unless you bend the dog down. Then you may be ok.

A fox trap is a coyote trap and conversely, you target one you'll get the other also. I run 550's with 2 coils, never had a problem holding anything or causing damage. Some guys like the 4 coils for when the weather gets rough with freezing conditions and for us at hay sets or they just want a faster firing trap. Just starting out like you are I'd start with the 2 coils and if you have issues that you think the extra coils would remedy then add them.

Thanks for the information. I don't plan on putting the extra coils on until I have some catches under my belt with them.

on the 550s ihave caught a lot of coyotes in them & do not see the need to 4 coil had tryed to set some at conventions & they are a bear. as stated unless you intend to use in winter conditions then you might want to go that way ,you will probably miss a lot of fox with the added springs due to pan tension being higher, making them more of a coyote only trap.
