I looked at the coyote put up thread but didn't find my answer, im sorry if this has been asked a bunch but im wondering if the red "saddle" on them needs to be removed? iv only got two yotes to put up an my dad who is my trapping partner fleshed one while I was at work but neither of us was really sure if that needed to come off or not, its on the board right now so im hoping it doesn't but if it does is there something I can do to fix it, hoping to have all fur ready to go to the flatiron for the very first time, don't want to look like a fool with mishandled fur. thanks in advanced for the help.

I take it off on my later caught coyotes. There can be a lot of fat under that saddle. Fleshed one yesterday that had at least 1/4 inch of fat under the saddle.

thanks Mr Spring, I did one from last march with the hounds tonight and see that I got quite a bit of fat off from under that saddle, the one I posted bout earlier was from the first few weeks of trapping season this year so im hoping we'll be ok with that one.

Hey silent dont no if its right or wrong but have allways fleshed my fox, yotes and bobcats clean as my coons when they done they dont feel like cardboard when mine are taken off the board and they are very flexable. I flesh mine with a post 2 handled fleshing knife starting at the nose only useing the dull side. Lot of guys say i overdue it so it might be just me

Thanks, I got all I could on the one I did. Had a rough time on the lower part of the "skirt" but I did my best, hope it was enough, next year I'll have to set up a system for yotes as my current beam is not set up properly to get the head on good, still learning.... Also used my necker an dull side only to get everything..... Thanks again

I use a different knife than you, though, and make good use of the razor sharp part of the blade to get the tough stuff. The end result is nice clean, dry skins with no grease that are supple and rattle a bit when shook out. Every coyote seems to be different. Some flesh easily, some are miserable to do. I'd rather do five coon than one coyote any day!
