Please don’t laugh at me…
My son and I caught our first ever porcupine last month…not wanting to waste it, we attempted to skin, flesh, and put it up. I managed all three steps without quilling myself! I skinned him and boarded him like a beaver, and fleshed him with a knife while on the board as it was too hard to flesh him on my beam with the quills. I then covered the fleshed side with salt in preparation to hang him in our fur shed.
Is there a “better” way to go about this if we catch another porky in the future (other than stuffing him in a log for fisher bait)?
Thanks! Dino

Thanks! I will try Borax...I have been changing the salt out as it becomes "moist". I have also been using salt to "cure" some misc critter feet and my beaver tails. Regarding the beaver tails; I opened them up, fleshed them, and coat them with salt in an attempt to remove the oils ...I typically then rehydrate the tails before using them to wrap the handles on the bows I make....should I assume that the Borax would work the same? I will do some research.
Thanks again, Dino

A long time ago in Vocational school a friend and I tanned a porcupine hide. got a tanning solution recipie out of one of AR Harding Books. came out real good. If I was you I would get one of the tanning solutions in Trappers catalog, should work pretty good. .

Got to tell you... Your "avatar" picture with you and your son is great! I hope I can take my son out hunting and trapping, but alas, he is only 10 months old at this point! Hopefully some day... That is great you have something to share with your son!

Thanks Falconer! Cannot wait to see some picts of you and your son enjoying the great outdoors together...my "words of wisdom" from having two kids (9yrs and 10yrs)... they grow up so fast and enjoy every minute!!! Seems like just yesterday I was pulling Colton in a sled...now he is pulling our trapping supplies from set to set!
I am very intrigued with your falconering hobby ...I would like to send you a PM the next time I'm in Albany!
Take care, Dino
