My son Colton and I have finally caught our first coyote! The coyote was a 47 pound female that appeared to be very old…she had calluses on her elbows and her teats look well used and weathered. Needless to say we are extremely excited as this was a targeted catch…unlike our Red Fox that we caught with our jack-o’-lantern in a cubby recently! Our plan was to have our first coyote tanned but unfortunately her fur is very poor… very thin tail, rubbed on her back and hips with areas of skin exposed, and very little belly fur… I hope it is not mange as I would like to try and skin her and put her up. If the fur cannot be salvaged I hope to still mount the skull. We caught her in a very simple dirt hole using one of the KB traps we won in the photo contest last year. This was truly a joint catch…like most of our sets, we discuss the trap location and type of set on a macro and micro level; I typically dig the trap bed, install stake, and set the trap; Colton digs the dirt hole and is in charge of choosing bait/lure combination (his guess is as good as mine) and covering the trap. This dirt hole contained sheep wool with some vent scent and fox urine. The trap was set the day prior to us finding the coyote in the trap. The trap caught her nicely across the pad. Colton loves to bring his new B-day 22 along on our trap line and I typically take care of business. Below are some photos we wanted to share. Good luck on your trap line!

Congrats on your first Yote!!.....looks and sounds like it could be mange, be careful as people can get mange as well as animals.

Congrats! If people could get mange, Mark Zagger would have been thrown out by his wife by now. Mange is species specific.

Sarcoptic mange is the mange that is contagious, while a human won't get "the mange" you can go 1-2 weeks with the mites buried in your skin until they die out, it is only temporary (called scabies). At least that is the way the vet explained it to me. I wouldn't want it.

AJ's right Mac, it is a canine specific mite. I'm sure I've had it before...little red rashes on my wrist...just for a day or two. They can't live on you. The conversations I've had with vets I've found their knowledge of wildlife diseases leaves a lot to be desired.
She doesn't look mangy Dino. Give us a close up, maybe we can tell.
